The Range and Mission Management Office, Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), at Wallops Island, VA, is seeking a skilled individual to serve as a chemistry lab manager and Team Lead for lab technicians performing chemical analysis activities directly supporting mission requirements.

Responsibilities

  • As Team Lead, identify, distribute, and balancing workload; monitor and report on status and progress of work; report on team work accomplishments, problems, and work processes and recommend corrective actions as needed.
  • Arrange for team member training; serve as coach and facilitator in coordinating team initiatives, policy implementation, and consensus building.
  • Lead and coordinate lab management and day-to-day activities of the chemical and biological laboratories conducting sample analysis to verify cleanliness and purity of commodities supporting launch vehicles and spacecraft.
  • Develop and maintain a Quality Assurance program to meet NASA and specific mission requirements and to maintain American Industrial Hygiene Association certification.
  • Ensure compliance with all appropriate NASA GSFC laboratory standards. Maintain lab equipment calibration and certification.
  • Provide technical expertise on the use of the Gas Chromatography (GC) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for analysis. Create new processes and procedures in support of customer requirements.
  • Oversee operation of International Space Station (ISS) environmental simulator for ground control samples.
  • Conduct sample analysis on aviation fuel and Aviator's Breathing Oxygen (ABO) in support of the WFF airfield. Participate in Air Force ABO Correlation Program.
  • Attend meetings with customers in support of the commercial resupply services contract to the ISS.
  • Implement corrective actions and address deficiencies identified during audits and lab inspections.
  • Provide financial analysis of lab functions to ensure NASA is being appropriately reimbursed for support of partner and SA activities.
  • Explore opportunities for lab growth, both in number of customers and in expanding into new capabilities where there is sufficient demand to support the expansion.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse technical science teams in various Agencies, Universities, and Companies. Interface with science teams conducting research on the International Space Station to support prelaunch science lab requirements.

Qualifications

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience includes performing duties such as managing a chemical or biological laboratory; analysis of lab functions to ensure appropriate funding and work alignment; providing technical expertise in GC or FTIR; developing new analytical methods, processes or procedures for sample analysis; coordinating and communicating with external entities providing services; leading audit or inspection preparation and guiding implementation of corrective actions.
