Summary

The Range and Mission Management Office, Goddard Space Flight Center at Wallops Island, VA, is seeking a skilled individual to provide chemistry lab support to the launch range by conducting chemical sample analysis on commodities supporting launch vehicles and spacecraft.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct sample analysis on aviation fuel and Aviator's Breathing Oxygen (ABO) in support of the Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) airfield. Participate in the AF ABO Correlation program.
  • Utilize Gas Chromatography (GC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for analysis of commodities.
  • Conduct sample analysis, report results, and determine and implement corrective actions as needed. Create new processes and procedures in support of customer requirements.
  • Maintain lab equipment calibration and certification. Ensure operations in clean work areas to meet mission objectives.
  • Manage inventory of lab equipment and allocate as required for short-term use.
  • Implement corrective actions and address deficiencies identified during audits and lab inspections.
  • Coordinate day-to-day activities of chemical and biological labs.
  • Oversee operation of the International Space Station (ISS) environmental simulator for ground control samples.
  • Participate in meetings with customers in support of the commercial resupply services contract to the ISS.

Qualifications

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-11), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is performing duties such as conducting analysis of samples to determine purity and cleanliness; determination of chemical or biological impurities in substances; developing or modifying analytical methods, processes or procedures; using GC or FTIR for sample analysis; applying expertise in laboratory equipment calibration and certification tracking and maintenance; preparing for, and implementing actions identified by, laboratory audits or inspections.
