The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases. Position Overview: PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals. KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES * Responsible for the daily care of research animals with focus on non-human primates (NHP). * Performing general animal husbandry and technical functions in support of research studies utilizing nonhuman primates (NHP) models * Feeding, housing, and maintenance of animal hygiene * Providing occupational, structural, social and edible enrichment to ensure animal well-being * Record keeping and database maintenance * Receipt, weighing, and identifying animals * Maintaining a proper living environment for nonhuman primates including enrichment, behavioral assessment, social housing and training * Observing and recording physical signs of nonhuman primate health and record data * Performance of specialized technical procedures necessary to maintain continuous operation of the animal facility * Assisting in conducting animal experiments * May operate cleaning and other animal support equipment and areas * Work requires the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict protocols * Work schedule may include weekend and holiday hours. * Other Duties as assigned BASIC QUALIFICATIONS * Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible technical experience which qualifies the candidate to sit for the LAT Certification Exam within 12 months of hire ' or an Associate's degree in Life Sciences or Veterinary Technology * Foreign degrees must be evaluated for US equivalency * Will encourage achievement of LAT certification; however, this is not a requirement. ALAT certification preferred * Experience in handling non-human primates * Ability to keep detailed records and maintain experimental data in a computer-based application/database * Knowledge of standard operating procedures for animal facilities and basic requirements for maintaining and scientific procedures in animal testing and data collection * Must possess basic Microsoft Office skills * Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Basic necropsy techniques * Ability to multi-task * Eagerness to learn new skills * Excellent organization and observation skills JOB HAZARDS * This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to animal(s) and/or animal material(s) * This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations * This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance * This position is subject to working in or have the potential to exposure to high noise levels for extended periods of time requiring medical clearance * This position is subject to the environmental conditions such as working outdoors, high humidity areas indoors, dampness and chilling, dry atmospheric conditions, etc. as part of the job Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE) | Minority/Female/Disabled/Veteran (M/F/D/V) | Drug Free Workplace (DFW) #readytowork
