Summary

This position is located within the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Northeast Area, Utilities Management Unit, in Beltsville, MD.

The incumbent will install, repair, and maintain high pressure systems and equipment. Use hand and power tools including threaders, tongue-and groove pliers, and abrasive and band saws. Interpret blueprints and instructions for required repairs and installations.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, adjust, repair, and maintain high and medium pressure steam mains and distribution systems.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain raw water lines from deep wells to water treatment plant, and treated water mains.
  • Installs wet taps on mains while under pressure.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain sanitary sewer mains and storm line systems.
  • Interprets blueprints, schematics, shop drawings, and specifications in order to plan, layout, and make required repairs, modifications and installations.
  • Makes installations in compliance with local steam fitting and plumbing codes.
  • Applies shop mathematics in order to layout angles, arcs, circles; cut, thread and make up various sub-assemblies in shop and finish assembly in other areas.
  • Operates safely various pieces of powered equipment, such as threaders, reamers, power hammers, drills, sewer rodding machines, diamond core drills, abrasive and band saws.

Physical Efforts : Incumbent works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms where the systems and equipment are hard to reach. Is required to stand, stoop, bend kneel and generally work in confined and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries parts, pipes or other equipment in excess of 50 lb.

Working Conditions : Incumbent is subject to hot and cold temperatures both in and outside of tunnels and buildings. Work is performed in hot, wet, muddy, barnyards, and other unsanitary places. Is subject to burns, scalds, blowouts, and infections due to unsanitary conditions.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
