Duties

Summary

This position is located within Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Facilities Division, Operational Management Unit, in Beltsville, MD.

The primary purpose of this position is to install, repair, and maintain refrigeration system and air conditioning systems for large commercial or research buildings. The incumbent will prepare sketches and circuit diagrams, and interpret blueprints and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain a variety of commercially-made laboratory equipment such as freeze dryers, refrigerated centrifuges, reverse cycle heat pumps, cascade systems.
  • Plan and calculate heat loads, humidity and refrigeration requirements
  • Prepare sketches, and circuit diagrams; Interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Use a wide variety of testing devices such as manometers, anometers, meggers, and ohmeters.
  • Understanding of the values and properties of electricity, water, and steam used for heating.
  • Install, service and maintain control systems using electric, electronic, solid state, and pneumatic controls.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State-issued driver's license to operate a Government-owned motor vehicle.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical.

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Physical Effort:
Considerable physical effort is used when working on parts or systems that are in hard to reach places. Incumbent must bend, stoop, kneel and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Must frequently carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh 30 to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:
The work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent is subject to bums, electrical shocks, cuts and bruises, and sudden changes in temperature from hot to cold. Is exposed to the possibility of toxic effects on eyes, skin, and respiratory system when working with refrigerant gases.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
