Summary

The Sciences & Exploration Directorate, Earth Science Division, Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Lab seeks a highly skilled researcher with expertise in measurements, modeling and data analysis focused on improving understanding of atmospheric ozone and the dynamical and chemical process controlling ozone distribution in the atmosphere. Experience with in-situ instruments and their deployment and with an emphasis on combining in-situ, satellite, meteorological and model data preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret in-situ measurements focused on improving understanding of the vertical, horizontal, and temporal distributions of atmospheric ozone.
  • Support the validation of satellite data products, testing and constraining of atmospheric chemistry and transport models, the derivation of long-term trends, and the impacts of any changes in ozone on air quality and climate.
  • Participate in fundamental studies of atmospheric composition and interpretation of measurements made during large scale campaigns involving multiple data sources (e.g., meteorological analyses, and satellite data).
  • Participate in mission planning, science definition, and architecture studies where air quality and tropospheric chemistry play a prominent role.
  • Participate in complex and innovative scientific projects in the areas of stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry, air quality, satellite data validation and interpretation of remote sensing data using in-situ measurements and other related areas.
  • Provide expert advice on complex analysis and data interpretation issues or problems where new analytical techniques must be developed to identify and evaluate findings. Understands data quality assurance protocols.
  • Manage existing portfolio of in-situ balloon instruments and participate in designing and leading future measurement deployments and field campaigns.
  • Participate in the management of an international network of atmospheric measurements.
  • Present results at conferences and/or publishes them in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-13:

Specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12) is experience such as:
-Analyzing, interpreting, and modeling in-situ measurements focused on improving understanding of the vertical distribution and changes of atmospheric ozone, published the results in the peer-reviewed literature.
- Diagnosing the relative contributions of transport and chemical effects in causing variations and changes of the vertical distribution of atmospheric ozone.
- Performing fundamental studies of atmospheric composition and transport and interpretation of measurements involving multiple data sources (e.g., model projections, balloon, ground based, meteorological data, and satellite data, published the results in the peer-reviewed literature).
- Supporting the development, operation and calibration of ozone measuring instrumentation, particularly balloon-borne in-situ ozone.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Life Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus
