Summary

The Washington DC VA Medical Center is seeking highly skilled Physician (Gastroenterology/Hepatology) to care for our nations Veterans. Board Certification in Gastroenterology/Hepatology as well as research and grant writing experience are preferred. For qualified candidates, protected research time is available.

Responsibilities

The Washington DC VA is recruiting for a Gastroenterologist with specialized training in hepatology who will spend 50% time in care of patients with advanced liver disease and 50% caring for patients with GI problems, including time in the endoscopy suite performing upper and lower endoscopies.

Duties include but may not be limited to:
  • Education of residents and GI fellows (supervising and teaching GI fellows, medical residents and students)
  • Providing Gastroenterology/Hepatology services required for VA beneficiaries.
  • Appropriately documented in the electronic medical record in accordance with standard community practice.
  • Providing direct hands-on patient care of patients with general GI disorders and acute/chronic liver disease including inpatient and outpatient care.
  • Providing on-call coverage of emergency consultations of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology service during the weekdays, weekends and holidays as part of a rotation.
  • Providing clinical guidance over the phone, by secure messaging and through the mail.
  • Ensuring accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations.
  • May be required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
  • Establishing inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care.
  • Demonstrating competent and effective oral and written communication.
  • Providing appropriate patient/family member teaching and education; evaluates effectiveness and level of patient/family member understanding of teaching provider.
  • Utilizing the CPRS computer software/program for entering and signing of medical orders such as laboratory studies, radiological studies, etc.
  • Maintaining familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures.
  • Ensuring a safe work environment and employee safe work habits. Makes referrals to subspecialists when their expertise is needed for diagnoses, treatments or procedures.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, tour may vary depending on needs of the facility

This position will remain open until filled. Certificates will be pulled for review on a biweekly basis on Thursdays.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Gastroenterology/Hepatology as well as research and grant writing experience.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; Light carrying, under 15 pounds; Use of fingers; Walking, 2 hours; Standing, 2 hours; Work closely with others; and Work alone.

Education

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP):This position may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and apply for EDRP within four (4) months of appointment. Final award amount and program start date is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office. If selected for this position, please contact the EDRP representative at the local HR office for guidance.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
