Summary

About the Position: Serves as a Supervisory Security Guard for the National Museum of the United States (NMUSA). Performs a full range of duties to include limited law enforcement and protection of government property against hazards of damage, theft, trespassing, espionage, riot at access control points.

Responsibilities

  • Performs supervisory and administrative duties relating to the security guard force.
  • Manages a guard workforce with the primary function of conducting access control to the campus of NMUSA.
  • Sets employee standards for performance and prepares performance evaluations based on employee compliance.
  • Conducts a detailed and comprehensive review of guard duty rosters noting all deficiencies in post manning to provide adequate security coverage.
  • Plans assigned work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of employees

  • Incumbent must be able to carry a firearm.
  • Incumbent must be able to work overtime if required.
  • Incumbent must be able to work emergency overtime if required.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Shift work is required, or a change in work shift may be necessary. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Incumbent will be required to pass entry level and annual re-certification of standard Army physical fitness/agility test (PAT) in accordance with Army Regulation 190-56.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • This position requires wearing a uniform and or protective clothing.
  • Position is designated as mission essential with varying hours and work schedules--incumbent will be expected to report to or remain at her/his worksite during dismissal or closure situations.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. Incumbent must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Incumbent must be able to pass initial and annual medical examinations.

Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment. In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience:One year of specialized experience managing a range of law enforcement functions, actions and activities in the protection of life, property such as physical security, anti-terrorism, and access control; reviewing law enforcement reports; and providing guidance related to law enforcement duties, operating plans, policies, and procedures.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education
