Responsibilities

Staff Gastroenterologists are responsible for supervising the evaluation of all new inpatient and outpatient gatroenterology consults. Staff Gastroenterologists perform GI endoscopic procedures in the endoscopic suite and/or operating rooms as well as additional procedures consistent their privileges. Additionally, staff Gastroenterologists are expected to perform and be proficient in the following areas:

· Colonoscopy;
· Moderate Sedation;
· Endoscopic Control of Bleeding;
· Esophageal Dilation (Endoscopic Pneumatic Dilators, Malloney Dilators, etc.);
· Esophageal Variceal Band Ligation;
· Esophageal Variceal Injection Ligation;
· Esophagogastroduodenoscopy with Biopsy;
· Heater Probe Coagulation;· Liver Biopsy;
· Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy;
· Flexible Sigmoidoscopy; and
· Other patient care related duties as necessary.

In addition to clinical duties, staff gastroenterologists are expected to be actively engaged in the supervision of medical residents, students and fellows assigned to the Gastroenterology Section. As part of the shared, cooperative partnership with our medical school affiliates, each gastroenterologist shall support furthering the education of medical students, residents, and fellows through lectures and presentations, provision of Grand Rounds, and through any other means designed to emphasize the development of those skills required to apply medical knowledge selectively based on individual cases and circumstances. Trainee responsibilities require that the selectee apply for and receive professorship at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/19/2020.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board Eligible Ok; Board Certified Preferred. Student, Resident, & Fellow Rotations require applicant w/ teach experience and/or strong interest in medical education programs (teaching/attending duties shared amongst department members). Trainee responsibilities require selectee apply for and receive professorship at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine; The VA TECH/Carilion School of Medicine; & University of Virginia School of Medicine

Specialized Experience: Inpatient and Outpatient Clinical responsibilities (include both clinics and consultative services); procedural GI services to include Endoscopy/Colonoscopy.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
