Summary

About the Position: Serves as Assistant Chief for Training with responsibility to develop, coordinate, implement and manage a comprehensive training program for employees of the Fire Prevention and Protection Division. Maintains training records. Applies a wide range of knowledge in the area of fire and emergency services, safety and fire prevention to insure training levels within the Division commensurate with the mission of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Develops training programs following the guidelines of the International Fire Service Training Association, National Fire Protection Association, Virginia Department of Fire Programs and other applicable proponent organizations.
  • Assumes responsibility for operation, scheduling and maintenance of the fire training simulator and training classrooms. Coordinates training requests from outside agencies.
  • Makes recommendations for correction of any fire hazards or safety hazards observed while performing duties.
  • Informs Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and shift supervisor of any failure of equipment, accidents, changes of operating plans and/or working procedures, etc.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a Secret Clearance.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. You will be required to sign a DA 5019 and take and pass a urinalysis test prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This position is mission essential to ensure the continued operation of mission essential functions of the activity.
  • This position may require you to wear appropriate uniform and/or protective clothing weighing up to 100 pounds (approximate).
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain valid state drivers license.
  • Incumbent must participate in the Fire Division's Fitness and Wellness Program that includes a cardiovascular physical fitness program IAW NFPA 1583 and DODI 6055.06.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes preparing and disseminating monthly training schedules; maintaining training records for division employees utilizing COTS automated database systems and other appropriate forms; monitoring training and certification levels to identify training requirements; submitting training certificates and other documents to appropriate agencies to obtain certifications. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-10).

  • This position requires that you have the following Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard certification: Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, Airport Firefighter, Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor III, and Fire Inspector II. Emergency Medical Technician - Basic level or higher issued by State or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians is also required.
  • Safety Officer certification must be obtained and maintained within six (6) months of entry on duty.
  • This position is required to have and maintain a American Heart CPR certification.
