Description: Scientist, Lead Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) and Machine Learning ( ML ) Image Science Engineer Job Code: SAS20202 - 6 Job Location: Springfield, VA Job Description: The Lead AI/ML Image Science Engineer will oversee a team providing Subject Matter Expertise in the areas of image science, machine learning, and data processing. The support will primarily focus on creating a research and development AI/ML framework for tactical UAV systems, that could also be extended to other DoD remote sensing systems. The position will involve familiarization with multiple modalities such as Electro-Optical (EO), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Overhead Persistent Infra-Red (OPIR), Full Motion Video (FMV), Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI), and Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI). Image Scientists are responsible for providing image expertise in support of developing analytical processes and tools as well as assessing image quality impacts associated with collection and processing for dissemination, archival, exploitation and display of digital imagery. Essential Functions: Site technical lead providing guidance and direction to a multidisciplinary team of 10+ engineers Responsible for the formation of a Research and Development AI/ML framework to include data collection capabilities, data labeling processes, algorithm training processes, and test & evaluation Provides image science expertise to conduct image/product quality analysis throughout TCPED chain. Assess utility of image processing routines and advanced algorithms operating on todays baseline and emerging remote sensing systems. Investigates, analyzes and provides solutions to complex problems encountered by engineering services and quality control using standard engineering practices. Authors technical documents including creating and delivering presentations Supports demonstrations and verification & validation activities to support the training and deployment of AI/ML algorithms for remote sensing applications Design and lead studies / analysis and support tool improvement efforts Qualifications: Bachelors Degree and minimum 12 years of prior relevant experience, or a Graduate Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. The degree must be in Imaging Science, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering; or equivalent. Active DoD TS or TS/SCI security clearance. Expert knowledge of remote sensing systems in areas such like imagery analysis, geolocation & mensuration, radiometric analysis / modeling, product quality assessments, numerical & visual performance assessments, and other special / novel phenomenologies. Experience maintaining Image/Product quality throughout TCPED chain and knowledge formulating product quality metrics. Experience supporting demonstrations and verification & validation activities to support the training and deployment of AI/ML algorithms for remote sensing applications Experience designing and leading studies / analysis and support tool improvement efforts. Preferred Additional Skills: Minimum of eight or more years of experience working with customer remotely sensed data Vast experience with image data processing throughout entire lifecycle from data acquisition thru exploitation Knowledge of ground processing architectures and image processing algorithms for passive remote sensing systems and transitioning algorithms and processes into operations Expertise conducting engineering analyses to resolve system deficiencies and optimize performance in coordination with partners and end-users Ability to develop engineering-level (not production-level) software code Exposure to Advanced Geospatial Intelligence (AGI) and FSG (Full Spectrum GEOINT). Experience with customer imaging systems and unique utility of different sensor modalities.
