Small Engine (2-Cycle) Mechanic
Purpose: Repairs and maintains gasoline engines used to power equipment such as portable saws, lawn mowers, generators, and compressors. Adjusts points, valves, carburetors, distributors, and spark plug gaps, using feeler gauges. Responsibilities: Reassembles engines after repair or maintenance work is complete. Records repairs made, time spent, and parts used. Performs routine maintenance such as cleaning and oiling parts, honing cylinders, and tuning ignition systems. Obtains problem descriptions from customers, and prepares cost estimates for repairs. Tests and inspects engines to determine malfunctions, to locate missing and broken parts, and to verify repairs, using diagnostic instruments. Repairs or replaces defective parts such as magnetos, water pumps, gears, pistons, and carburetors, using hand tools. Sells parts and equipment as part of their job function. Shows customers how to maintain equipment. Qualifications Experience, Education, Skills and Knowledge: High School Diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Skill to repair machines or systems using the needed tools. Ability to determine causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. Ability to talk to others to convey information effectively. Skill to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
