Job Announcement

Supervises and provides technical supervision for a segment of the county's vehicle fleet/equipment repair and maintenance program. Plans, directs and coordinates the maintenance and repair of automotive, bus, fire, construction and industrial vehicles and equipment; or plans, coordinates and implements the quality control inspection of vehicles and equipment for the department, to include all DVS facility locations. Plans and schedules workload and assigns work to staff. Reviews work in progress to ensure acceptable repair and maintenance procedures are being used. Provides technical guidance and assistance to diagnose, repair and replace parts. Ensures required parts, materials, tools, and equipment are provided. Provides training opportunities for subordinates and evaluates their performance and abilities.Monitors and enforces preventive maintenance, emission inspection and safety inspection schedules.

Note: This announcement may be used to fill future full-time Vehicle and Equipment Supervisor positions at other Department of Vehicle Services (DVS) locations.

Locations: Alban, Jermantown, Newington or West Ox depending on the needs of the hiring department.

Schedule: The work schedule consists of day shifts (5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; or 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.) and evening shifts (2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.).

Illustrative Duties

  • Plans, directs and coordinates the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction and industrial equipment;
  • Assigns and inspects work in progress and upon completion;
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance in diagnosing malfunctions, repairing and replacing parts and assemblies, selecting parts and materials, and operating tools and equipment;
  • Instructs mechanics in difficult repair work and may test-drive;
  • Assists in the selection and placement of personnel;
  • Evaluates the work performance of subordinates;
  • Counsel employees about work-related issues and assist employees to correct job-skill deficiencies;
  • Determines schedules, sequences, and assignments for work activities, based on work priority, quantity of equipment and skill of personnel;
  • Inspects and monitors work areas, examines tools and equipment, and provides employee safety training to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules;
  • Compute and prepare estimates and review actual costs for materials, labor, or outside contractors;
  • Orders parts, tools, supplies and equipment;
  • Inspects new vehicles and equipment for conformance to procurement specifications.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods used in the mechanical repair of a wide variety of automotive, construction and industrial equipment;
  • Skill in performing difficult mechanical repairs;
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise a work program of equipment maintenance and repair;
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;
  • Ability to read and comprehend relevant documents.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education; plus two years of experience in an equipment maintenance/repair shop.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Must hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B.
  • May be required to provide copies of driving record periodically for verification of driving status.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experienced as a supervisor or team lead.
  • A minimum of one Master Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in a specific series such as School Bus, Automotive & Light Truck, Medium-Heavy Truck Certifications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • This position is classified as "essential personnel". The appointee is required to report to work during times of inclement weather or other emergencies.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in print.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 50 pounds on average of once daily; stoop bend twist and reach many times daily; use ladders extensively; use creeper or get on hands and knees several times daily; ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
