The Senior Researcher provides expertise in the physics of multi-functional concepts and systems, including high-temperature structures, active and passive thermal protection systems, advanced barrier coatings, cryogenic structures and advanced structural configurations for application to spacecraft and high-speed aircraft, and their interaction with the environment to determine the nature, magnitude, and interrelationships of environmental loads and their effects on these systems.

Responsibilities

The Senior Researcher for Advanced Structural/Thermal Systems:

- Conducts systematic, intensive research to further knowledge in multi-functional concepts, advanced materials, and systems that has general applicability for use by others.

-Leads technical consulting, problem solving, and maintaining global awareness of international competitive research and technology environment in thermal-structures and thermal systems.

- Leads and participates in Agency program planning, advocacy, and implementation of technology strategies for advancing the state-of-the-art in advanced aircraft and in-space structural concepts, on-orbit assembly, and multifunctional systems.

- Authors position papers, subject matter white papers, state-of-the-art assessments, technology roadmaps, strategic investment plans, etc.

- Possesses expertise in the principles, standard practices, and methods of developing and/or assessing thermal-structural concepts and systems, i.e., theoretical, numerical, or experimental structural mechanics and heat transfer.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess expert knowledge and at least 3 years of specialized experience in the physics of multifunctional concepts and systems, including high-temperature structures, active and passive thermal protection systems, advanced barrier coatings, cryogenic structure, and advanced structural configurations for application to spacecraft and high-speed aircraft as well as their interaction with the environment to determine the nature, magnitude, and interrelationships of environmental loads and their effects on these systems.

At least 1 year of this experience must have been in planning and executing difficult programs of national significance or planning and executing specialized programs that show outstanding attainments in the field of research or consultation. At least 1 year of the specialized experience must be at least equivalent to experience at the GS-15 level.

Education

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

Additional information

If the selectee is a current NASA employee with placement rights, the employee will receive a temporary promotion and serve for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the temporary promotion, the selectee will either return to an appropriate position at a grade level no lower than the grade previously held OR will be converted permanently without further competition.

If the selectee is not a current NASA employee, the selectee will be placed on a term appointment for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the term appointment, the appointment will either conclude OR the selectee may be converted permanently without further competition.

This temporary promotion or term appointment may be terminated at any time.

Applicants that meet minimum eligibility requirements outlined in the Qualifications and Education sections of the vacancy announcement will be referred to a panel of subject matter experts for further evaluation.
