Summary

The Engineering & Technology Directorate (ETD), Electrical Engineering Division, Flight Data Systems and Radiation Effects Branch (Code 561) at Goddard Space Flight Center, is seeking a broadly trained technician, who understands and applies a practical knowledge of electronic theories and principles. The Electronics Technician provides expert-level support for scientific or engineering operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to various laboratories, which includes the configuration of the laboratories, the negotiation of space requirements between multiple project teams, and the development and implementation of appropriate laboratory procedures.
  • Maintain flight worthiness of laboratories that support multiple flight projects and is responsible for the successful development and testing of flight data systems used by multiple flight projects.
  • Coordinate all flight data systems development teams in the areas of Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) certification, and ISO9000 MTE calibration and serves as the point of contact in these areas.
  • Interpret circuit wiring, logic cable diagrams, drawings, specifications, and schematics of complete systems and equipment to understand the function and interconnections of the various assemblies and troubleshoots systems.
  • Plan and direct the installation of complex systems and associated facilities; particularly where there are construction problems; may deal with contractors and/or public utilities and the need to modify equipment for novel site characteristics.
  • Design and analyze circuits, determining design feasibility, evaluating equipment performance under varying environmental conditions, and collects relevant performance data.
  • Analyze and diagnose faults in the operational configuration of electronic systems and equipment.
  • Report safety hazards, potentially hazardous situations, and close calls to his/her supervisor and assists him/her to identify and eliminate unsafe conditions.
  • Duties described above are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-11:

Specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) includes experience supporting the operation and maintenance of analog and digital circuits, computer systems, subsystems and components; in the use of a wide variety of types and models of electronic equipment and systems.

To qualify for the GS-12:

Specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) includes experience in the operation and maintenance of analog and digital circuits, computer systems, subsystems and components; in the preparation and use of technical documentation, schematic diagrams, equipment operation and service manuals, test plans and procedures, and the like; and skill in the evaluation, compilation, and presentation of data.
