Summary

This position is located with the Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Northeast Area, Mycology & Nematology Genetic Diversity & Biology Laboratory in Beltsville, MD. The Lab is responsible for research and taxonomic services on plant pathogenic fungi. Incumbent provides support to Research Scientists in their research functions involving preservation, classification,distribution and nomenclature of fungi.

Responsibilities

  • Make preliminary determinations of accurate scientific names for the current and future holdings of the U.S National Fungus Collections and associated fungal databases.
  • Assist in curation responsibilities by adding specimens to the U.S. National Fungus Collections and by performing necessary tasks for general maintenance of the Collections
  • Review fungus-host plant distributions and enters associated data in database for public display.
  • Maintain literature, nomenclatural, and reprint files to ensure that stored data are easily available, complete and accurate.
  • Perform literature searches and cataloging of information from the literature and ensures proper spelling of nomenclature and resolves simple naming issues.

At the GS-07:
Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with the care and maintenance of plant collections; keeping digital records of fungi or plant collections; and following proper protocol in the curation of various plant species.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if related. Directly related degrees may include Biology, Botany, Library Studies, Museum Studies, Plant Pathology, or Scientific/Technical Communications.

OR

Completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.).

Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.): Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. S.A.A. is based on (1) Class Standing - applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class, based on completed courses; or (2) Grade-Point Average - applicants must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (3) Election to membership in a National Honor Society - membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-09:
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with the care and maintenance of plant collections; keeping digital records of fungi or plant collections; following proper protocol in the curation of various fungal species; and developing reports reflecting status of collection activities.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D., if directly related. Directly related degrees may include Biology, Botany, Library Studies, Museum Studies, Plant Pathology, or Scientific/Technical Communications.

OR

A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.
