About the Position: Kenner Army Health Clinic is a multi-specialty outpatient clinic staffed by over 450 military, civilian and contract personnel caring for a supported population of over 32,000 eligible beneficiaries and 70,000 students annually. Clinical services include primary care and family medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, optometry, orthopedics, physical therapy, psychiatry, social work services, nutrition services and ancillary services.

Responsibilities

  • Records the reason for the optometry visit and medical and visual history of each patient using automated systems.
  • Takes anterior and posterior ocular photographs for patient records.
  • Assists medical clerk with the patient check-in and appointments as needed.
  • Trains new contact lens patients on the insertion, removal relocation, and care of hard and soft contact lenses.
  • Identifies ocular emergencies and refers to the attending optometrist.
  • Measures the distance and near visual acuities with and without glasses/contacts.
  • Prepares spectacle orders from the optometrist's prescription and places order on the computer for transmission to the optical fabrication laboratory.
  • Conducts an automatic refraction, various color vision tests, various depth perception tests, monocular amplitude of accommodation tests, and confrontation field tests.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting patient interviews to gather medical history and information on visual complaints; orienting patients and setting up equipment in preparation of routine tests; performing visual screenings (i.e., near vision, distant vision, central and peripheral visual fields, condition of the pupil and intraocular pressure); assisting the optometrist in performing specialized procedures; documenting health care activities in the patient's records as appropriate. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
