Responsibilities

The APRN Nurse Practitioner in Mental Health Service has advanced knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of the physical and psychosocial problems of the individuals and their families.The primary patient population is veterans with medical illnesses with coexisting mental health illnesses, including substance abuse. The scope of practice includes health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention, management of minor acute illness, and stable chronic diseases, staff and patient education, community referrals, and interdisciplinary coordination of patient care. He/she prescribes, renews and modifies therapeutic regimes, including medications in accordance with Medical Policy Memorandum # 11-67. He/she has is ongoing collaboration across healthcare settings with peers, physicians and appropriate others on the health care team.

This position is specially funded through Office of Homeless Services to provide clinical assessment and treatment for Mental Health patient receiving Homeless Services.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
• Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Education and Experience:

• MSN or Master's degree in related field with BSN or bachelor's in related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by an appropriate certifying board: the American Nurse Associate (ANA) American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is required.
• MSN from Bridge Program (no BSN required) approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by an appropriate certifying board: the American Nurse Associate (ANA) American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is required.
• Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and 1 years of nursing practice/experience. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by an appropriate certifying board: the American Nurse Associate (ANA) American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is required.

Nurse Practitioner Positions: For Nurse Practice positions, applicants must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner for the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.

Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continues walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
