Basic Function The purpose of the position is to provide nursing instruction to nursing students. This position must meet the instruction standard of the NLNAC for qualified master's prepared experienced registered nurse for teaching campus and clinical labs and didactic. The primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis is on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities. Faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens. NOVA faculty may be assigned to any campus based upon enrollment and staffing needs. Duties and Responsibilities Full-time teaching faculty in Nursing are responsible for teaching various courses in the designated discipline/field of study. Courses are offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning environments. All faculty members must be available to teach assigned day, evening and/or weekend classes. NOVA faculty may be assigned to any campus based upon enrollment and staffing needs. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, conduct requisite office hours, student conferences, serve on assigned division/campus/college committees and participate in curriculum development. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, the ability to work in a collegial manner with a highly diverse faculty, staff and student population and the ability to teach in an urban community college setting. Candidates for all positions are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the effective use of instructional technology, including learning management systems like Canvas. This appointment has a normal teaching load of 15 credits per semester. Minimum Qualifications Virginia license as a registered nurse. In accordance with SACSCOC accreditation requirements: a Master's degree in Nursing OR Bachelor's degree in Nursing and a Master's degree in another Health related field (eg, Health Administration, Health Informatics, Public Health) with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Nursing. Experience teaching in the hospital, clinical and/or classroom setting. A minimum of two (2) years of related full-time or full-time equivalent experience, preferably occupational experience. CPR certification for Healthcare Providers required. Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching/supervising ADN nursing students in a clinical setting. Previous academic experience such as classroom teaching, online teaching and/or curriculum development in a community college setting. Recent clinical experience and teaching (didactic) experience in a college and university setting preferred Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The ability to effectively teach Nursing concepts in the classroom. Ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction. Ability to use on-line resources and Learning Management Systems. Competent in the use of a computer , Power Point and Microsoft Word. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
