Responsibilities

Legal Assistant, PD #81183A, 81182A
Reviews legal documents, determines deadlines for action, prepares procedural
motions or other legal documents to meet the deadlines. Incumbent, prepares written memoranda regarding such communications for litigation files, maintains a tickler system to track upcoming case deadlines, uses various electronic systems and databases, closes cases and coordinates remands, researches a wide variety of facts and laws, ensures case information has been properly docketed.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/02/2020.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

GS-06 Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: reviewing legal documents, maintaining a tickler system, using various electronic systems and databases, entering confidential information into a database, researching a wide variety of facts and laws, closes cases, coordinates remands. Prepares correspondence to obtain consent to disclose personal information all while working under supervisory controls and supervision of work.

GS-07 Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-06GS-06) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: working independently, reviewing legal documents under little or no supervision, maintaining a tickler system, using various electronic systems and databases with less supervisory control, entering confidential information into a database, researching a wide variety of facts and laws, closes cases, coordinates remands. Prepares correspondence to obtain consent to disclose personal information. The legal assistant independently conducts research, selects evidence from documents and prepares drafts of pleadings or memoranda. The employee carries out assignments and resolves problems and deviations in line with previous training and VA/OGC policies, precedents, directives and practices.
