Duties

Summary

The physician shall provide primary care services required for VA beneficiaries. The physician provides care at the Lexington Park, MD Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). This is a small CBOC offering Primary Care and Mental Health services. All labor and services shall be provided including management, supervision, teaching, consultations and reports. Care shall be appropriately documented in the electronic medical record in accordance with standard community practice.

Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • The Primary Care physician's actual clinical activity shall be a function of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process and the overall demand for emergency services.
  • Provides direct hands-on patient care. Assesses patients for acute illnesses and determine whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting. Manages chronic disease.
  • Provides clinical guidance over the phone, by Secure Messaging and through the mail. Ensures accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations.
  • Responsible for supervising and teaching medical residents and students. May be required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
  • Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care.
  • Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication.
  • Provides appropriate patient/family member teaching and education; evaluates effectiveness and level of patient/family member understanding of teaching provider.
  • Utilizes the CPRS computer software/program for entering and signing of medical orders such as laboratory studies, radiological studies, etc.
  • Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures.
  • Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion including periods of walking, standing, regular and recurring bending, stooping, lifting heavy objects such as assisting patients on and off examination tables.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
