This position maybe filled with a Physician Assistant or a Nurse Practitioner. The PA/NP will be assigned to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Salem, Virginia, Medical Service in support of COVID-19 operations and is a temporarily appointed (not-to-exceed 1 year) full-time schedule.

Primary duties of the incumbent include provision of inpatient clinical care for Medical Service patients in the Medical ICU (MICU), Step Down Unit (SDU), and occasional Medical Service patients lodged in the Surgical ICU (SICU) or held in the Emergency Department. May assist with MICU rounds conducted by the Pulmonary/Critical Care and/or Cardiology staff. Incumbent will be responsible for completing History and Physical (H&P) for patients in assigned areas, and facilitating the admission and/or discharge process for those patients admitted during their tour of duty. While the incumbent will directly report to a dedicated MICU/SDU Hospitalist Physician, there will be additional consultative support available from Cardiology, Pulmonary/Critical Care, Hematology/Oncology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Dermatology, and Infectious Disease, as well as Surgical, Mental Health, and Interventional Radiology. Further descriptions of tasks to be performed include the following described below:

* Incumbent will act as a liaison between the in-patient Ward Physicians, Community Living Center Physicians, Primary Care Physicians, MICU/SDU Physicians, and any other involved providers to provide continuity of care during the patient's stay, to assistance with and facilitation of the transfer and/or discharge process for the veteran (including inter-ward communication, making f/u clinic appointments, as well as prescribing discharge medications and prosthetic items), as applicable.
* Incumbent will round on all SDU patients and select ICU patients daily on weekdays, with additional rounds expected on weekend or holiday shifts. Round times will be determined by the Section Chief, MICU/SDU, or the Chief, Medical Service and may include duties solely during the nocturnal hours.
* Incumbent will assist Salem VAMC ICU Physicians in performing complete evaluations on VA patients in the in-patient setting, including ordering and interpreting appropriate lab, x-ray, and special studies.
* Incumbent will perform complete History & Physicals on medical patients, identifying and alerting the ICU Physicians to any conditions that present. Evaluates, provide care, and order labs, special studies, IVs, diet, and any required therapeutic interventions, as appropriate.
* Evaluates and provides appropriate intervention (in conjunction with supervising Physician and consulting Physicians) for ER and nursing home patients consulted for ICU care.
* Working closely with their supervising Physicians and the Emergency Department (ED) Physicians, the incumbent will assist in making the decision to admit, treat, or discharge patients from the ED.
* Incumbent is responsible for evaluating, screening, and counseling patients on health maintenance, and for promoting appropriate utilization of community resources. Designs, conduct, and/or participate in research studies, manage databases, and perform quality assurance, as applicable.

The incumbent is required to possess and demonstrate both competence and appropriate appreciation of core Internal Medicine procedures, as defined in the Salem VA Medical Center Bylaws and credentialing package. Participation by the incumbent in all activations of the Code Blue/Rapid Response Team in the areas of the MICU and SDU is mandatory. Incumbent must demonstrate ability to master the various software programs used by the facility. Proficiency in typing/keyboarding is essential

Master's degree from a PA training program certified by the ARC-PA OR a Master's degree in a health care occupation/or a health related science degree and a baccalaureate degree from a PA training program certified by the ARC-PA.


Approximately 6 years of Physician Assistant practice characterized by progressively more responsible leadership assignments in clinical, administrative, educational and/or research areas AND demonstrates the following behaviors:
-Establishes and maintains relationships within the service, with facility management and other services that result in improved patient care.
-Accepts substantial and continuing responsibility and accountability for planning, organizing, coordinating and controlling a complex integrated health care program.
-Makes decisions which serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of PAs within the local institution and the total health care system.
-Participates in long range program planning and model development for effective delivery of health services.
-Facilitates the delivery of patient care in collaboration with health professionals, health managers and other health care personnel.
-Assures implementation, maintenance and compliance with standards of professional practice of all health care personnel within the program

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.


A bachelor's degree from a Physician Assistant training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); OR,

Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; OR,

Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

CERTIFICATION: As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified Physician Assistants on VA rolls as of that date.
