Summary

These positions are located with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Board of Veterans Appeals is the component of the VA that is responsible for entering the final decision on behalf of the Secretary. Serves as a Legal Assistant in the Board of Veterans Appeals, in the Correspondence Unit of the Customer Support Branch, Office of Litigation and Customer Support Division, Office of Operations.

Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:
Responsible for providing a full range of program support assistance to staff members by reviewing incoming communications and mail items;
Enters information into tracking systems, scanning and associating the correspondence and mail items to the claims folder;
Maintains attention to matters requiring expediting and special handling with deadlines to be met, such as congressional correspondence;
Ensures incoming mail electronic and otherwise and all other forms of correspondence are accurately classified and routed;
Maintains and monitors tracking systems and updates them accordingly;
Ensures that internal and external staff is advised of any items that require action;
Prepares reports and analyzes reports to ensure accuracy and completeness;
Reviews correspondences prepared for signatures of upper management including, Attorneys, Team Lead of Correspondence Unit, Special Counsel of Customer Support etc.;
Schedules appointments for key staff and updates on any changes;
Provides guidance and instruction to clerical employees on procedures and the functions of the office as well as training new clerical employees;
Accomplishes other administrative tasks as assigned by the Team Lead, Special Counsel, Branch Chief, and Division Chief;
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level. Specialized experience includes: performing administrative duties in a law office or related environment; using a computer to perform administrative and research duties, and to organize and communicate information; coordinating the workflow of an office by determining priorities to meet established deadlines; and receiving and assisting visitors, answering and directing phone calls, and composing correspondence to provide information and answer inquiries. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work is predominantly sedentary, requiring some walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying light to moderate weight and size items such as books, files and paper. The Legal Assistant performs most of the work in an office setting or meeting room. Some duty stations may be located within a hospital, with some exposure to patients, etc. Occasional travel may be involved to attend training, meetings, and liaison.

Telework: VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. This position may be authorized for telework. Telework eligibility will be discussed during the interview process.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
