Paleobiology Database Programmer

The George Mason University Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences (AOES) in the College of Science invites well-qualified applicants to apply for a full-time Paleobiology Database Programmer position. This position is fully funded by sponsored program funding and is expected to continue for three years, subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding. The position reports to the Principal Investigator of the sponsored project, the objective of which is to improve the accessibility, interoperability, sustainability and governance of paleobiological data and cyberinfrastructure resources.

About the department: From improving numerical model predictions of next year's atmospheric temperature to explaining geological strata laid down in previous eras, from monitoring water transport through the atmosphere to modeling water movement at the bottom of the ocean, scientists and students in AOES are working to better understand our planet in myriad ways. AOES activities include research and a doctoral program in Climate Dynamics; research and undergraduate degrees in Atmospheric Science, Earth Science, and Geology; and undergraduate minors in Atmospheric Science, Earth Science, Ocean and Estuarine Science, and Paleontology.)

Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the Paleobiology Database Programmer will be programming some of the basic structure of the Paleobiology Database (PBDB). The incumbent will be responsible for Paleobiology database systems administration, including monitoring all aspects of the database, and ensuring it is up and running correctly at all times. Duties will also include database programming, including updating existing modules and creating new ones to perform specified tasks. Much of the work will involve crafting new user interface modules that interact with the database API. Additional duties will include updating existing Web sites, and creation of new ones based on current Web site design modalities with provided content and specified functionality.

Required Qualification: * A Bachelor's of Science, or equivalent life/work experience, in computer science or a related field; * Knowledge and experience in the Perl programming language, along with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and R programming proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications: * A Master's of Science or equivalent experience.
