Job Announcement

Performs a full range of plumbing assignments using independent judgment to make decisions requiring the application of procedures and practices to specific work situations and may assist in training lower-level plumbers. Works in concert with other plumbers and trades to perform a full range of plumbing assignments for projects on county properties as required for routine and preventative maintenance. Utilizez a wide range of tools and other equipment as used in the plumbing trade. Mustl be able to provide customer service with courtesy, respect, and attention to detail. Works cooperatively with staff and assures that work is completed in accordance with agency procedures and plumbing codes.

The position reports to 4030 Hummer Road, Annandale, Virginia, and will be dispatched to various Park Authority sites throughout the county. Working hours are from 6:00am to 2:30pm Monday through Friday.

Illustrative Duties

  • Performs the most complex troubleshooting and repair of plumbing systems;
  • Serves as lead master-level plumber for diagnosing and repairing equipment with unusual or very difficult problems;
  • Plans new or modified plumbing systems;
  • Installs, maintains and repairs sewer, water and gas plumbing systems;
  • Repairs and/or replaces water heaters and recirculating pumps;
  • Maintains/repairs single and three phase electric pump motors and pump motor control centers;
  • Maintains/repairs commercial, industrial, and residential plumbing components, fixtures, special materials and apparatus;
  • Performs renovation and preventive maintenance functions;
  • Clears stoppages in drains and sewers;
  • Prepares cost estimates and meets with plumbing contractors to provide information and will inspect contract work upon completion;
  • Prepares activity reports;
  • Follows and enforces safety regulations and procedures;
  • Requisitions materials and equipment;
  • Maintains inventory of spare parts/materials in shop or on assigned service vehicle;
  • Operates assigned service vehicle;
  • May serve as a team leader to Plumber I’s and/or Maintenance Trade Helpers providing guidance/direction and instruction, appraising performance, serving on selection panels and inspecting/approving the work performed by team members.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of plumbing and related systems to lead diagnostic tasks for complex maintenance and repair activities;
  • Thorough knowledge of the standards, practices and equipment of the plumbing trade;
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and national plumbing and safety codes;
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures as well as common hazards associated with plumbing;
  • Ability to troubleshoot a wide variety of plumbing problems;
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions as well as drawings, specifications and
  • manufacturer’s manuals;
  • Ability to plan and perform work at the Journeyman-level;
  • Ability to estimate time and materials needs;
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships;
  • Ability to train/instruct and provide guidance/direction to Plumber I’s and Maintenance Trade Helpers.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: high school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education; two year technical degree in the plumbing trade; or completion of an apprentice-level vocational training program in plumbing; plus three years of progressively responsible plumbing experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid state motor vehicle operator's license;
  • Valid journeyman plumber certification from the state of Virginia.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Backflow Prevention Device Worker Certification.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of plumbing and related systems to lead diagnostic tasks for complex maintenance and repair.
  • Thorough knowledge of the standards, practices and equipment of the plumbing trade.
  • Ability to troubleshoot a wide variety of plumbing problems; Ability to follow written and oral instructions as well as drawings, specifications, and manufacturer's manuals.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and national plumbing and safety codes;
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs. unassisted. Ability to climb using a portable lift or a ladder. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
