The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services seeks a dynamic, results-oriented agricultural marketing executive to promote and enhance the profitability of Virginia agriculture and agribusiness in both domestic and international markets. This is a key position that has direct responsibility for promoting agriculture, the number one private industry in the Commonwealth. The successful candidate will provide executive level leadership, direction, and management to the Division of Marketing and Development’s programs, plans and resources in order to develop and implement effective domestic and international marketing, economic development and promotional programs, as well as advancing food access initiatives, in support of the agency’s mission and strategic plan. Additionally, the Division Director will work in coordination with agency leadership and other state executives and outside organizations on policy and regulatory objectives impacting domestic and international trade of agricultural products and food distribution programs managed by the agency. This position involves considerable overnight travel, both domestic and international.

QUALIFICATIONS: Exceptional leadership characteristics and competencies to lead and manage teams and staff in addition to excellent project management skills that include significant experience working and collaborating with high-level government officials and business executives in other government agencies and private sector organizations. Significant experience administering and applying current marketing/economic development principles and business opportunities in both domestic and international markets is needed as well as comprehensive experience and knowledge of federal and state agricultural and food issues and programs. Relevant experience includes that related to agriculture, retail food, food production or agribusiness marketing or a similar natural resources field. The ability to integrate agency programs with an overall economic development and job creation agenda, including organizing and coordinating domestic and international trade and reverse trade missions, managing agribusiness investment projects, promoting equitable food access, and implementing other key agricultural marketing initiatives. Additional qualifications include exceptional communication skills to include written, verbal/public speaking, listening and negotiation with a demonstrated record of success in developing, implementing, evaluating and iterating strategies and solutions; exceptional strategic thinking skills and the ability to translate these skills into sound operational plans; exceptional ability to foster collaborative and impactful relationships with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders and with representatives of agriculture and agribusiness industries, federal/state agencies, and other organizations; demonstrated ability to model teamwork behaviors and team building skills; and exceptional problem-solving ability – both systematic and data driven analysis. The selected individual must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid driver’s license; have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety; be able to obtain a valid U.S. Passport; and have the ability to travel domestically and internationally. Prefer: Degree in agriculture, natural resources, food science and nutrition, marketing, business, economics or a related field is preferred with a graduate degree desired. Knowledge of state and federal government operations and functions strongly preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience. Bilingual or multilingual in any language is a plus, but not required. Hiring Salary Range: $78,659 - $115,000 annually.

Final candidate must successfully complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check. In accordance with the Code of Virginia, incumbents of this position must complete a Statement of Economic Interests form upon hire and annually thereafter.
