Summary

This position is in NASA's Pathways Intern Program that provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. This position is in the Engineering Directorate, Systems Integration and Test Branch. This office manages environmental test facilities that cover most flight system payload test requirements for a variety of aerospace missions. We are a one-stop shop for space environments testing.

Responsibilities

  • As a Pathways Intern, your assignments will focus in the area of Integration and Test Engineering, with an emphasis on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, for NASA Langley aerospace projects
  • You will receive instruction from an experienced engineer to gain analytical and laboratory experience.
  • You will gain experience in the performance of EMC testing as related to verifying that critical mission critical aerospace development and flight hardware will be compatible with the defined operational RF environments
  • You will not only gain experience in the overall integration and test phase of aerospace hardware development, but you will gain specific training and experience in the design, analysis, and execution of various EMC tests
  • Areas of interest should include electronics engineering, electrical engineering, with an emphasis on radio frequency (RF) engineering
  • You will be heavily involved in gaining hands-on experience in the laboratory with an emphasis of EMC testing
  • You will train as a Certified Facility Operator and Test Conductor for vibration workmanship, acceptance, and qualification-level testing on mission critical aerospace development and flight hardware

  • You must be a U. S. citizen or national
  • Enrolled/accepted in an accredited educational institution
  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher
  • Maintain enrollment at least half time as defined by the institution
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.9 on a 4.0 scale
  • You will be required to undergo a pre-employment background investigation
  • You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement
  • You must be at least 16 at the time of appointment
  • Applicants must have an estimated graduation date of no earlier than one calendar year from the expected start date
  • You will be expected to start on January 19, 2021 and no later than June 2021
  • Available to work at least 640 hours prior to completion of degree.


Qualifications

Starting GS grade levels are determined by education level:

For GS-5: Completed at least 60 semester credit hours or at least 90 quarter hours of undergraduate education.

For GS-6: Completed 90 or more semester credit hours or 135 or more quarter hours of undergraduate education.

Education

To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher with a major study in one of the following:
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronics Engineering

Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying for this position.

Engineering degrees must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum
accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. To find out if a degree meets this requirement, go to http://www.abet.org.

Additional information

Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed.

You will only be considered for the highest grade for which you qualify.

The salary range indicated in the announcement is representative of a full-time, year-round work schedule. Your salary will be calculated based on the number of hours worked while on rotation.

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment.

You may be required to perform rotational assignments in various organizations. Additionally, this position requires you to work a specific schedule such as one semester at school followed by one semester at NASA. The supervisor and Intern will agree on a formally-arranged schedule of school and work rotations. A rotation is a defined period of work or school study, usually a semester, a summer, or a quarter in length.

Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completing degree requirements provided they:
  • Successfully completed an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale);
  • Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience before completing degree requirements;
  • Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and
  • Maintain acceptable performance.
Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion. At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If an Intern is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing.

The Intern may be converted to a term or permanent position with promotion potential to the GS-13 level.
