Summary

This position is a working leader assigned responsibility for building and utility maintenance work. The incumbent will provide daily direction to at least three employees.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Responsibilities

  • Pass on to other workers the instructions received from the supervisor by assigning daily tasks to individuals of the work group.
  • Ensure necessary plans, materials, supplies, equipment and tools are available when needed.
  • Check work in progress and upon completion to determine/unsure supervisor's instructions are being followed and to meet deadlines.
  • Report progress and delays to supervisor and on overall operations and problems.
  • Perform maintenance on motor vehicles and equipment using full range of automotive hand and power tools (including pneumatic tools), and hydraulic vehicle lift.
  • Operate a backhoe and/or skid-steer with backhoe and bucket attachments in digging trenches for water and sewer lines, exposing damaged portions of the same, and for loading materials into a dump truck.
  • Operate field mowers and tractors in mowing operations, involving proper hookup of mowers and power trains to tractor power take-offs; proper servicing of both tractors and mower units; safe operation of tractor/mower units on terrain and ground conditions.
  • Serve as Fleet Manager for the Facility Management Software System (FMSS) and the Financial and Business Management System (FBMS).
  • Serve as the COR on construction projects when designed; inspects and reports on the performance of contract work for compliance with contract terms and quality of work.
  • Incumbent initiates basic procurement actions by ordering supplies and materials required in day-to-day work.

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms. Where surfaces are to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach, the incumbent may be required to stand, stoop, bend kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 100 pounds. Operation of tractors and field equipment requires considerable arm leg movement while compensating for rough or uneven terrain.

Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to inclement weather, noxious fumes, ticks and chiggers, dust and dirt that requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment when encountered or anticipated. Works on scaffolds and ladders, under and on equipment, and near heavy power equipment.

Incumbent is exposed to constant bouncing on tractors used on rough terrain or on trail maintenance vehicles, and must constantly guard against slip, trips, and falls in the execution of field assignments.

Work schedule may include Saturday and Sunday duty days, and occasional holiday assignments (holiday pay status) to meet maintenance division responsibilities. Incumbent is required to wear the prescribed maintenance uniform.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
