Summary

This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory, in Beltsville, MD. Using a metabolomics-oriented approach, the incumbent plans, implements, and reports results on the nutritional and non-nutritional components of foods.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with other members of MAFCL, BHNRC, and USDA?s Agricultural Research Service to ensure the studies are relevant to both human nutrition and agriculture.
  • Conduct independent as well as team-based research and will be expected to develop productive collaborations with scientists from universities, industry, and government and other stakeholders.
  • Effectively translate and communicate research results to the public.
  • Develop innovative measurement systems for the determination of food components that influence human health using mass spectrometry.
  • Integrate metabolomics, lipidomics, and chemical fingerprinting to study the nutritional content and variability of plant and animal foods.
  • Support research on the impact of genetics, environment, management of agronomic production practices, and post-harvest processing (GxExMxP) on the nutritional quality of food crops.
  • Interact with MAFCL and BHNRC scientists to support research on the impact of food composition and diet on human health.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree : physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.


GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are:
  • Experience with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution high mass accuracy tandem mass spectrometry methods for analysis of plant and animal foods and tissues;
  • Experience performing spectral fingerprinting to analyze the chemical variability of plant materials;
  • Experience with applying chemometric methods (e.g., PCA, SIMCA, PLS-DA) to complex data sets; AND
  • Experience publishing research in peer-reviewed scientific journals related to field crops.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation. Any offer made is considered a tentative job offer pending the outcome of the pre-employment check. Retention in the position is based upon a favorable adjudication of the background investigation. The incumbent will be subject to periodic reinvestigations.
