Summary

About the Position: Serves as Station Chief with shift responsibility to direct firefighting activities of the crews, receiving general instructions from supervisor. Plans work schedules and the sequence of operations to ensure an even flow and distribution of work. Directs crews in the performance of various standby duties at the station, including maintenance and inspection of equipment, execution of training, drills and the performance of fire prevention inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of fire suppression theory and techniques to perform offensive and defensive firefighting tasks in response to structural, vehicle, aircraft, or hazardous material incidents.
  • Respond to emergency incidents (e.g., structural fires, brush fires, major vehicle accidents, aircraft incidents, disaster response, control and recovery, medical aid, and hazardous material) to direct emergency operation crews.
  • Recommend improvements in (or compliance with) operating procedures, correction of hazardous conditions, and fire prevention regulations.
  • Conduct structured and unstructured training classes for firefighter personnel to provide needed backup skills and cross training in firefighting services.
  • Direct the placement of firefighting equipment and personnel to respond to particular types of emergencies.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the employee to have and be able to maintain both, a valid state driver's license in order to obtain a government driver's license.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. Employee is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R. Must pass a urinalysis test prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This position requires a physical agility test.
  • Incumbent must wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 75 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG).
  • This position requires you to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) to include weekends and holidays and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes directing personnel in firefighting activities, medical emergencies, fire inspections and investigations, oversee the maintenance of station and/or firefighting equipment, and implement program requirements for fire prevention/protection.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Selective Placement Factor: These certificates are needed from one of the following Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard: Airport Firefighter, Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Hazardous Material Incident Commander, Hazardous Material Technician, Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator ARFF, EMT-B issued by the State of Virginia or NREMT.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).

Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and minimum qualification requirements prescribed by OPM within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Education
