Summary

You will serve as a PAINTER LEADER in the PRESERVATION SHOP (CODE 970), PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT MANAGER (CODE 901), PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT (CODE 900) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities

  • You will ensure that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
  • You will check work in progress and check for compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.
  • You will provide information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems.
  • You will lay out work and proceed with proper sequence of operation.
  • You will submit completed paperwork for inclusion in Technical Work Documents (TWDs) .
  • You will provide process improvements to engineering to reduce cost or improve functional characteristics.
  • You will use specialized equipment that includes precision measuring devices such as magnetic and electronic DFT gages, WFT gages, dew point recorders and monitors.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to Lead or Supervise:
  • Operating state-of-the-art equipment to prepare surfaces and apply coatings to critical surfaces complying with drawings, specifications, technical manuals, engineering standards and manufactures' requirements.
  • Determining methods taken, materials, and equipment used for preparation of surface, proper coating application, and Quality Assurance documentation.
  • Using complex equipment and calibrated instruments to prepare and coat interior and exterior surfaces of ships, submarines, and equipment.
  • Preparing surfaces using blast equipment, including bulk blasters, vacuum recover blasters, large walk-in blast booths and Ultra High Pressure Water Jetting (UHPWJ).
  • Maintaining all required paperwork such as tape used to make surface profile readings, M readings for DFT, and in-progress quality assurance forms and certifications.
