The Washington, DC VA Medical Center position of Director of Bronchoscopy laboratory is part of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine section in the Department of Medicine. The Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care is an integral component of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at George Washington University.

Responsibilities

• Clinical Care of patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, including participation with department call schedule including weekends
• Develop and maintain a faculty ambulatory Pulmonary medicine practice
• Provide Pulmonary and Critical Care consultations in the inpatient and outpatient context
• Perform Pulmonary and Critical Care procedures. These include general pulmonary and critical care procedures as well as advanced interventional procedures, including EBUS and radial probe bronchoscopy, navigational bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, trans-thoracic biopsy, indwelling pleural catheter, chest tube placement, pleurodesis and argon plasma laser therapy Additionally, point of care ultrasound is routinely utilized in the critical care and pulmonary settings.
• Interpret pulmonary function tests, including cardiopulmonary exercise tests
• Complete all Medical Record documentation requirements as specified in the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations on a concurrent basis
• Provides clinical consultation over the phone or video clinic, by Secure Messaging and through the mail. Ensures accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations.
• Supervise and instruct Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellows, Internal Medicine residents, and medical students, on Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine Services
• Serve as faculty attending and cover ICU team consisting of a fellow, medical residents, and medical students, including daily teaching and work rounds
• Develop, implement, accomplish, & monitor goals for Critical Care and Pulmonary education with specific emphasis on diagnostic and therapeutic pulmonary medicine procedures and literature regarding the same
• Assist in the review and updating of the Pulmonary and Critical Care curriculum as needed
• Provide 6 to 8 core curriculum lectures per year in the areas of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine for the GWU Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellow education program. Provide grand rounds, life conferences and teaching conferences to hospital staff, residents, interns and students
• Serve as attending for the fellows and residents while on the Pulmonary consult service
• Supervise fellow, resident and medical student procedures
• Provide mentorship to GWU PCCM fellows interested in academic medicine and IM residents interested in Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship training and research
• Develop procedural training modules for PCCM fellows and residents
• Serve as the Director of the Bronchoscopy laboratory of The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Section.
• Serve on DC VA Medical Center department and hospital committees as requested by the division chief
• Maintain an academic affiliation with the GWU Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep, and Medicine of the Department of Medicine
• Establishes good inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care. Including, attending departmental meetings regularly
• Collaboration with other VA Medical Center's within the VISN to establish a strong referral base for our Interventional Pulmonology program
• Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication. Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
• Ensure that performance measure and standard of care are met by the bronchoscopy laboratory as well as oversee day-to-day operations.
• Implement a plan for improving the bronchoscopy laboratory which includes equipment purchasing and logistical operations.

Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday, also include weekend on-call.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:

Board certification in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine

Trained to perform and teach all the advanced Pulmonary Procedures as described above under patient care

Trained to perform and teach point-of-care ultrasound

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), an education loan reimbursement program within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA Handbook 1021.01 and submit required documentation to complete an EDRP application package within four (4) months of appointment. Program eligibility and the final award amount (up to $200,000) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services Program Office after review of a complete EDRP application packet.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
