Responsibilities

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Integrated Service Network 6 (VISN 6), at the Salem VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Salem, Virginia, within the Surgical Care Service Line.

Incumbent must possess advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating a high level of professional competency in managing assignments/projects of a broad scope, magnitude and complexity. Major Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide comprehensive Ophthalmology care services as well as follow-up care of existing conditions and management of emergency conditions.
  • Provide Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Ophthalmology Services, including hospital rounds.
  • Perform/supervise Ophthalmic Surgery including laser procedures in the Operating Room, minor surgery room, and laser room, averaging one to five (1-5) cases per day based on complexity.
  • Conduct weekly outpatient and inpatient clinic, averaging twenty to twenty-five (20-25) patients per day.
  • Provide non-operative Ophthalmology hospital rounds for ophthalmology patients.
  • Document services through appropriate notes, such as History and Physical, Progress notes, Operative notes and Discharge Summaries.
  • Participate in clinical research protocols either developed locally in cooperation with other faculty or developed at other institutions for multi-center studies.
  • Assist residents and students in selecting, developing and preparing abstracts for presentation at meetings.
  • Alternate on-call coverage with other VAMC Staff Ophthalmology Surgeon(s) and outside consultants.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials."

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
