Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

-Supervises and mentors practice managers in the VA Clinics of Lynchburg, Staunton and Wytheville.
-Directs and supervises clinical activities of the primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurse managers at the VA Clinics of Lynchburg, Staunton and Wytheville.
-
Active participation in major Medical Center Committees, Work Groups and /or Performance
improvement projects.
-Working knowledge of Clinical Performance measures.
-Experience developing and managing schedules.; working collaboratively with other specialties, departments, and/or Service Lines.
-Participates in recruitment, retention, resource management, and clinical practice management in all functional areas under her/his oversight.
-Ensures on-time completion of congressional, patient advocate, white house, and other suspended inquiries for the five VA Clinics.

- Performs basic clinical skills required for direct patient care to evaluate, diagnose, consult, and provide basic treatment.
- Performs appropriate evaluation and management of patients to include ordering of diagnostic tests, consultations and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions.
- Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care.
- Documentation of medical record is in keeping with the bylaws of the Medical Center.
- Provides clinical oversight of the clinical care to which assigned.
- Ensures that medical treatment or care plans consist of current best medical practices and are evidence-based if possible.
- Evaluates obstacles that may potentially impede healing when recovery of function is slower than expected. These obstacles may include physical, mental, and non-medical issues such as undiagnosed or under-treated conditions, psychological legal, or workplace issues. When
obstacles are identified, they should be appropriately documented.
- When obstacles that involve the patient's health-related employment situation have been identified, appropriate referrals should be made to other clinicians, benefits or claims payers, case managers, occupational health and safety professions, human resources, or workplace supervisor.
-Identifies areas for continuous improvement by monitoring multiple quality measurement tools within Primary Care, including the VA Clinics.
-Ensures the practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies.
Academic/Teaching/Training/Administrative:- Involved in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives.
- Provides leadership guidance and consultation to staff on units to which assigned.- Is involved in the supervision and teaching of house staff and other trainees assigned as appropriate.- Serves as a consultant to the medical center regarding employee health and safety matters.
- Is responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system, as appropriate.
- May be involved in planning and overseeing the completion of personal research programs, designed to provide information regarding program planning and relevant treatment approaches.

Preferred Qualification: Three or more years of experience as a high performing VA PACT Primary Care Provider

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm (Evenings, weekends and Holidays as needed)

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
  • Physical Requirements: Incumbent needs to be mobile in that the job requires: sitting, walking, standing, and bending. Work requires trips daily from employee's work-site to other areas throughout the Medical Center.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
