Responsibilities

Assigns work orally and through work orders, building plans, and blueprints.

Maintains balanced workloads by shifting assignments, workers and other resources to achieve the most effective work operations.

Plans and establishes overall leave schedule.

Reviews and analyzes work accomplishments, evaluates work progress, control cost and anticipates and avoids potential problems by recommending corrective action to superiors.

Accomplishes all tasks by following the NEC, appropriate technical data, blue prints, freehand sketches, work orders, verbal instructions and by using correct test equipment, tools, and protective clothing.

Advises the maintenance and operation supervisor on results of visual inspection of all line wires, belts, general condition of generators, and fire pump engine and related equipment.

Provide guidelines and support in repairing and replacement of fluorescent fixtures, lamp holders, starter holders, and light ballasts.

Provides information and advice to higher level supervisors management officials and staff organizations of feasibility of work assignments.

Supports the weekly check of all emergency generators and fire pump engine.

Sets performance standards and makes formal appraisals of subordinates.

Explains new work techniques; Investigates grievances and complaints, resolves them informally and notifies superiors of those of a serious nature.

Investigates work related problems such as excessive costs or low productivity and determines causes; implements corrective actions within authority to resolve work problems; and recommend solutions to staffing problems, engineering requirements, and work operations directed by other supervisors.

Installs, maintains, and repairs electric wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels and outlet boxes.

Performs minor electrical repairs, such as, but not limited to, replacing receptacles, wall switches, bed light switches, fan switches, and switches on other equipment.

Removes and reinstalls light fixtures to facilitate other building maintenance.

Performs other directly related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Electrician makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, requiring considerable standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and kneeling; works in tiring and uncomfortable positions; frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools and equipment. Incumbent must be able to lift and/or carry 75 pounds.

The incumbent works inside and outside of the Medical Center. Work is usually dirty, dusty, hot, cold, greasy, and noisy, and is sometimes performed during inclement weather. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shock, burns, and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
