This position reports directly to the Corporate Vice President for Southside Hampton Roads. The role is responsible for strategy, operations, and projects impacting the member facilities. Strong communication skills and broad vision and strategic thought area essential for the success of this role. Understanding the individual operations and cultures of each division is paramount and the relationship with the divisional leaders is critical to achieve the system goals. The direct reports to this role are the Director of Operations, the Director of Strategic Sourcing and the Director of Support Services and the leadership of a team of 285 FTEs. This role is critical as part of Sentara's integration into the WORKDAY ERP implementation, which launched planning in August of 2020 and is expected to be implemented in January of 2022. The ERP implementation includes Supply Chain, Finance and Human Resource applications.
Responsibilities
Strategic Planning
  • Supports Board Goals as outlined in the Sentara corporate goals and Strategic plan.
  • Coordinates the Sentara leaders in the continued development of a strategic vision and supporting business model for optimized purchasing and supply chain efficiency
  • Leads the process to establish and maintain a relevant strategic plan that advances and fulfill the Sentara Strategic Plan
  • Serves as an integral leader as part of the Vizient GPO relationship with the MNS Aggregations group (Medstar, Novant and Sentara)
  • Develops and drive a stakeholder collaboration culture that includes rules of engagement addressing
  1. an understanding of and sensitivity to unique and often disparate facilities' views and culture,
  2. a commitment towards data driven collaboration goals and system strength, and
  3. a clear and consistent approach to defining and prioritizing initiative

Innovation
  • Develops a strong enterprise capability in business intelligence by ensuring that Sentara has high reliability processes in place for data governance, data integration, data mining, spend analytics, comparative benchmarking, spend forecasting and opportunity analysis
  • Ensures a high level of data integrity is maintained by providing actionable information that is refreshed on an ongoing basis with the most contemporary data available and that all Sentara stakeholder groups have a strong confidence level in the trustworthiness and value of the data
  • Applies in-depth knowledge of healthcare supply chain industry trends and leading practices to influence strategic direction, operations and enterprise service offerings
  • Serves as a catalyst for innovation through the identification, evaluation and championing of new industry leading programs for enterprise wide consideration. Generate enthusiasm and momentum around a mission imperative for innovation and advanced supply chain practices
  • Seeks leading practices and innovations from industry related to supply chain and purchasing

Financial and Budgetary Responsibilities
  • Develops annual operating plan and goals that aligns with the strategic plan, including new facility recruitment planning, M&A integration, logistics planning, vision and direction
  • Provides leadership to develop and present an annual budget.
  • Provides leadership to the annual Cost implementation projects across the system. ($70M to $90M annually)
  • Provides Accountability for Sentara cost savings results, growth and P&L
  • Provides Accountability for Sentara total economic value creation for stakeholders including cost savings, administrative fee generation and excess admin fee distributions
  • Provides leadership and accountability in meeting GPO targeted financial goals.

Relationship Management
  • Develops, leads and implements a facilities and vendor relationship strategy that maximizes Sentara's leverage in the marketplace. Maintain superior performance against industry benchmarks
  • Coordinates key interactions/communications within the system.
  • Works to resolve conflicts and coach individual facilities towards consensus
  • Attends all key operational leadership meetings and system leadership meetings.
  • Develops strong relationships with Sentara clinicians; be perceived as an individual with high credibility when interacting with physicians, nurses and other practitioners. Possesses the ability to effectively influence Sentara practitioners and clinical teams to address concerns, overcome resistance, gain support and buy-in to Sentara initiatives involving clinical preference products and services

Operations Leadership
  • Manages and reports activity and success through key performance indicators and other metric development. Ensure operating and executive performance scorecards and dashboards are generated and distributed to all concerned parties. Monitor performance and take appropriate countermeasures on an ongoing basis as required to address negative trends
  • Develops and grows Sentara services portfolio
  • Works closely with stakeholders to identify and address their issues and work collaboratively to determine the best solution

Team Leadership and Training
  • Instills shared goals and accountability for the Supply Chain leadership team
  • Establishes and promote a culture of collaboration and innovation among the team
  • Ensures staff skills and knowledge capacities are optimized and current with industry trends
  • Ensures tools, data and infrastructure are optimized for performance
  • Provides a sense of Presence and clear direction for leaders.

• In-depth knowledge of healthcare supply chain operations, spend categories, contracting process and vendor community

• A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in healthcare purchasing or supply chain, including at least 5 years at the senior leadership level

• Requires significant strategic experience working within a supplier, hospital setting, hospital system, or association

• Experience interacting with a board of directors responsible for directing strategic planning, business planning and/or other organizational development activities

• Strong analytical skills with ability to use data to persuade stakeholders to consensus

• Demonstrated management skills that include making effective and efficient decisions, and prudent judgment to achieve long range and short-term goals
• Demonstrated high level of business acumen including successful P&L management

Goals and Objectives
The VP of the Supply Chain is be expected to have made measurable progress or achieved the following key objectives within the first 12 to 18 months. The goals indicate some of the challenges, not listed in any order of priority.
  • System Leadership: Become an integral part of the Sentara Health Partners leadership team; develop a sense of personal ownership for the future success of the organization while demonstrating a "can-do" and proactive approach
  • Develop strong Internal relationships and capitalize on opportunities for system savings: with and earn the respect of leaders and decision makers within the facilities, including physician influencers. The role requires the leader to be a strong communicator and consensus builder as he/she will need to engage multiple stakeholders who may have differing priorities and be able to develop solutions which will benefit Sentara collectively
  • Enhance the current relationship with partner organizations: Be the key leader in relationship with the System GPO (Currently Vizient), the distributors (Owens and Minor, Henry Shine, Cardinal), the Vizient Aggregation group (Medstar, Novant and Sentara), ERP (Workday) and other partner organizations.
  • Meet the targeted Savings per year: as outlined in annual goals.
  • Recruit, mentor and develop the supply chain team. Ensure they have the tools, resources and opportunities to perform in their roles and grow in the supply chain function. Foster the team's ability to succeed. This includes ensuring that current open positions have been filled
  • Evaluate and further develop the infrastructure for Sentara including identifying ways to build expertise in the right areas and to make processes less labor intensive
  • Enhance value analysis capabilities to continue to reduce cost, improve quality of care and find hidden opportunities and risks. Ensure that a contract database is developed, data is standardized and benchmarking increased
