About the Position: Director for Nursing, Surgical Nursing, 4 Center. Inpatient Unit, Internal Medicine, Ortho - Wounded Warriors, Ortho - OI, Plastic Surgery. Hours of Work: 8 hour shifts Monday-Friday, 12-hour shift work as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide an advanced level of clinical nursing care and oversight of patients, based on physician's medical plan of care and assessment.
  • Recognizes life threatening conditions that require immediate attention, implementing appropriate emergency measures.
  • Coordinate patient and family needs with the case management team.
  • Develops and/or oversees development of nursing care plans, setting standards for care; identifies nursing issues specific to care of patients within unit.
  • Continuously evaluates all clinical procedures, occurring within unit, to ensure quality patient care.
  • Ensures all levels of unit staff are practicing within their scope and receive supervision, as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary group to formulate plans of care that is individualized and in accordance with accepted standards.
  • Implements and recommends needed revisions to policies, procedures, and related nursing directives.
  • Serves as a member of various committees, as required.
  • Completes reports, records maintenance, and related requirements, necessary to reflect treatment and care for patients assigned to unit.
  • Collaborates program/activities addressing target populations, goals, clinical outcomes, and cost-effective care.
  • Supervision: Provides technical oversight, plans work, makes shift and individual work assignments, etc.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated ?Mission Essential?. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • This position may require the incumbent to complete a one year supervisory probationary period.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Supervisory Nurse (Clinical):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification at the time of application)

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification with your application package.)

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (Note: You must submit a copy of your registration with your application package.)

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series September 7, 2017 or before. You will be required to provide approximate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Experience: At least at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience independently providing professional nursing care in a variety of medical services such as post-operative care, various medical-surgical and/or Ortho/Plastics services; leading others in projects or assignments AND possession of a graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
