Summary

This position is located in the Department of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). The purpose of this position is to perform scientific research and professional curation in Anthropology in the general field of human interaction with the environment.

Responsibilities

  • Independently initiates and maintains an innovative scholarly and scientific research program in the impact of humans on the environment, including issues of sustainability and the study of anthropogenic ecosystems.
  • Research consists of systematic, original studies which approach problems of broad scope, and which result in scholarly publications considered to be a major contribution to scholarship in the field.
  • Enhances Anthropology collections from a curatorial and research perspective, including developing research based on Smithsonian collections, expanding collections use, building collections, and improving metadata associated with collections.
  • Effectively participates in departmental and other public programming initiatives, such as exhibits, workshops, popular writing, and other dissemination and outreach opportunities.
  • Serves as consultant and expert advisor on professional matters in area of expertise to the Smithsonian, governmental agencies, colleagues, educational institutions, scientific organizations, and the general collections submitted to the Museum, reviewing research proposals, manuscripts and published materials, answering public inquiries, and serving on departmental, institutional and professional organization committees.
  • Seeks external funding when appropriate via grants and other funding sources.

Basic Requirements for Positions in the Smithsonian Institution:

Applicants must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in anthropology, history, biology, physical science, geology, human geography, or other closely related fields that primarily concern human adaptation to the environment or evolutionary development.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, Applicants must possess the following....

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as research and curation in anthropological research on the impact of humans on the environment, including issues of sustainability and the study of anthropogenic ecosystems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

  • Knowledge of and ability to conduct original, field and collections-based scientific research in Anthropology in the general field of human interaction with the environment, as it relates to the impact of humans on the environment, including issues of sustainability and the study of anthropogenic ecosystems as evidenced, for example, by peer-reviewed publications, oral presentations and/or seminars.
  • Knowledge of collections-based research and curation practices and procedures for collections in specialty area.
  • Ability to perform public outreach communicate orally to non-scientific audiences.
  • Ability to provide professional service as a reviewer or editor of a peer-reviewed journal and serve as a consultant and advisor on areas of expertise.
  • Skill in securing external funding in support of research program.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
