Summary

The School of Language Studies at the Foreign Service Institute is looking to fill the following language training instructor vacancies:

Arabic Jordanian/Palestinian Dialect, Arabic Gulf/Saudi Dialect,

Arabic Egyptian Dialect, Bulgarian, Croatian, French, Georgian

German, Japanese, Lao, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese,

Spanish, Serbian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an instructor teaching speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing to a full range of adult students
  • Develop and present tailored materials for students with specialized needs
  • Develop and revise courses and instructional materials
  • Evaluate student progress and course effectiveness
  • Provide language training and cross-cultural awareness to prepare Department of State employees and other foreign affairs professionals for their specific assignments

  • Incumbent will be subject to random drug testing.
  • Verification of employment eligibility in the United States is required.
  • Must serve a one year trial period, unless excepted by regulation.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required. If not a U.S. Citizen, must have valid U.S. work authorization and submit proof with application materials.
  • Must be able to maintain a High Risk Public Trust clearance.
  • This position requires the applicant on a case-by-case basis to complete a language proficiency assessment.


Qualifications

Applicants must meet all the required qualification requirements, including education and any selective placement factors described below by the closing date of this announcement. If you are qualifying based on education OR if there are mandatory education requirements listed below, you MUST submit a copy of your college transcript with your application.

Applicants applying for the GS-11 grade level must meet one of the following requirements:

A. Have at least 1 full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service which demonstrates a practical knowledge of the subject area of the position and of the methods and techniques of instruction to successfully perform the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Teaching or instructing in an adult education program, secondary school, college, military installation, or industrial establishment in the appropriate field(s); Supervising or administering a training program. Developing or reviewing training/course materials, aids, devices, etc.; evaluating training results; or working in the occupation or subject-matter field of the position to be filled that required training or instructing others on a regular basis.

OR

B. Have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M. from an accredited college or university with a major field of study in education or a subject area related to the position to be filled;

OR

C. Have a combination of graduate level education with a major field of study in education or a subject area related to the position to be filled AND specialized experience (as described above), which is equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. This experience and education together meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

Combination of Experience and Education: When an applicant has less than one year of specialized experience as described in the announcement, he or she may combine successfully completed graduate-level education with experience to meet the total qualification requirements. Generally, 18 graduate semester hours is equivalent to 1 full-time year of graduate study (your school and department determine what constitutes 1 full time year of graduate study). The percentage of specialized work experience and the percentage of graduate study must total at least 100%.

Note: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Teaching or instructing in an adult education program, secondary school, college, military installation, or industrial establishment in the appropriate field(s); supervising or administering a training program; development or review of training / course materials, aids, devices, etc., and evaluation of training results; or work in the occupation or subject-matter field of the position to be filled that required training or instructing others on a regular basis. Note: If you are qualifying based on education OR if there are mandatory education requirements listed under the Qualifications and Evaluations section, you MUST (1) submit a copy of your college transcript(s) with your application, and if selected, an official college transcript(s) will be required to verify education prior to employment; (2) transcripts MUST be legible AND include your name, major, school name/location, course title/number, date completed, grade, and number of credits earned; (3) if you attended more than one college you MUST submit a transcript from each institution if you wish your education to be considered in qualifying you for this position; (4) all college coursework that may be pertinent to qualifying you for the position MUST be included on the transcripts. If you fail to provide requested information, or the information you submit is insufficient to verify your eligibility, you WILL lose consideration for this position.
