The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) is a Level I tertiary multi campus teaching facility affiliated with the University of Maryland, School of Medicine and over 100 educational institutions. The VAMHCS consists of the acute care Baltimore facility; the multi building Perry Point campus with acute medicine, mental health and long term care; the Loch Raven campus with long term care; and six urban and rural outpatient clinics.

Responsibilities

A position exists for a full-time Registered Nurse/Case Manager in the Infectious Disease (ID) Clinic Program at the Baltimore Medical Center, VA Maryland Health Care System. The RN-ID Clinic Case Manager provides primary care to Veterans with HIV+/AIDS and Hepatitis C, as well as coordinates Pain Management Treatment and Home-Based Intravenous Antibiotic Therapy. The RN-ID Clinic Case Manager manages an outpatient caseload of Veterans through coordination of care with physicians, nursing staff, and other health professionals within the hospital system. The incumbent performs at a higher level of nursing practice characterized by both increased complexity of clinical decision-making and enhanced skills in managing patient populations in a specialized primary care setting. He/she utilizes the nursing process within his/her scope of practice to identify health issues/needs of patients within the Infectious Disease Department.

In addition to the current services being provided to Veterans in the Infectious Disease (ID) Clinic--that include but are not limited to treatment for HIV+, Hep C, Home Based Antibiotic Therapy with PICC Line placement, ID Wound Care Monitoring, and Pain Management--The ID Clinic has expanded services to include those Veterans who have been diagnosed with Advanced Liver Disease (ALD). Here at the Baltimore Medical Center, the treatment of ALD begins with the non-invasive fibroscans which are scheduled for and carried out in the ID Outpatient Clinic by our certified Nurses. Also, the ID Clinic is and will be implementing multiple new programs including new Hepatitis vaccines, and Penicillin Sensitivity Testing, all of which are organized and personally implemented by the ID Clinical Nursing staff.

Work Schedule: 7:30am-4pm or 8am-4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and understanding the English language.
  • Physically, mentally and emotionally fit to perform the duties of the position.

Preferred Experience:
  • Minimum of five years acute care facility experience.
  • Case Management experience (preferably within the last 2 years).
  • BSN or higher degree (Masters in Nursing preferred.
  • Recent (within the last 5 years) infectious disease experience preferred.


Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: It is VA policy to ensure that all selected applicants and employed personnel are physically, mentally and emotionally fit to perform the duties of the position to which assigned. The pre-placement physical examination shall be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness for candidates for appointment in VA. Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
