Summary

Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final salary.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). EDRP reimburses qualifying student loan debt up to $200,000, based upon the availability of funds, tax-free for up to five years, or service periods.

Responsibilities

-Perform assessments and/or examinations on encounters with all presenting patients.

-Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests necessary to complete the ED evaluation.

-Provide Attending Physician oversight to residents, mid-level providers as applicable.
-Stabilize all critically ill or injured patients.

-Admit patients to the hospital or discharge them from the ED with appropriate follow-up.

-Discuss treatment plan with patient and or family/caregiver (following COBRA guidelines).

-Perform medication reconciliation with all ED discharged patients.

-Participate in Quality Assurance, chart reviews, and support applicable ED performance measures.

-Coordinate patient care with consultants as deemed appropriate.

-Emergency Department physician will support the safety, occupational health, and fire protection program by the application of approved standards, regulations, practices and work methods.

-Participate in committees.

-Emergency Department Physicians will report to the Assistant Chief, Medicine Service.

Work Schedule: Rotating shifts to staff all tours (days, nights, weekends, and holidays).

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: -Board certified by either American Board of Emergency Medicine or American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine.-Minimum 2 years experience working in Emergency Medicine.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Functional requirements include Light to Moderate Lifting (15 - 44 lbs.); Light Carrying (15 lbs. and under); use of fingers; both hands required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Both eyes required Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted). Incumbent needs to be mobile in that the job requires: sitting, walking, standing, and bending. Work requires trips daily from employee's work-site to other areas throughout the Medical Center

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
