Job Announcement

This announcement may be used to fill one or more positions. Controls disposal and/or collection activities where residential and business waste products are delivered or collected, while simultaneously operating various types of heavy equipment for the purpose of waste separation, processing, or transportation. Serves as front line code compliance and safety monitor in waste disposal, collection, separation and transportation activities. Leads staff/contractors in safety and code compliance. Coordinates activities with other Lead Refuse Operators and maintains effective relationships. Operates specialized equipment engaged in collection and disposal activities of solid waste, and landfill operations while simultaneously monitoring operations for compliance. Operates a variety of heavy equipment which may require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Provides training on heavy equipment. Controls disposal and collection activities, such as tipping floor operations and/or field operations. Visually inspects waste for hazardous material and regulatory compliance. Organizes collection and disposal operations and activities on site and/or in the field. Monitors specific operating area for safety concerns. Performs equipment maintenance; such as checking and adding fluids, changing hydraulic hoses, minor repairs, and trouble-shooting problems. Prepares daily inspection reports, pre-trip check sheets, log sheets and operating records. Advises the public on the correct way to dispose of refuse, recycling, hazardous and regulated material. Responds to county-wide emergencies, or special events requiring debris removal, snow removal, and disposal or refuse collections. Engages in safe working practices and complies with Solid Waste safety programs and guidelines. Complies with the DPWES Safety Competencies. Performs related duties as required.

Note: Solid Waste operates a seven (7) day per week operation with early and late shifts, to include alternate schedules. Overtime, weekend and holiday work is required.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to High school diploma or a GED issued by a state department of education, and three years of experience operating motorized heavy construction equipment and/or semi-tractor trailer, as appropriate.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of experience with Solid Waste Collection experience working with a variety of Refuse Vehicle. Three years proven experience as crew leader for collection crews in the field. Two years' experience training drivers and operators on various pieces of equipment. Three years customer service experience with Solid Waste Customers. Accident free driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to handle strenuous activities and repetitive motions; Ability to perform duties in any type of weather conditions. Ability to lift 50 pounds. This position requires one to be able to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift, and handle materials with manual dexterity. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
