TheLead Medical Officer serves as a leader, direct and indirect supervisor for a Veterans Health Affairs outpatient clinic providing numerous medical and administrative services to eligible veterans to include: primary care, mental health, social work and laboratory services.

Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Associate Chief of Staff for Primary Care & Community Medicine at the James H. Quillen VAMC, Mountain Home, TN duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead and manage, either directly or indirectly, all services provided at assigned clinic for eligible veterans. Support the Mission, Vision and Values of the James H. Quillen VAMC.
  • Assist ACOS with developing and maintaining Service Agreements, as appropriate, to delineate those areas of responsibility that are jointly covered by staff at the VA Clinic with oversight and/or support provided by the parent facility at Mountain Home.
  • Develop, coordinate, implement and uphold procedures and policies to ensure efficient, effective care for eligible veterans.
  • Assess, improve and enforce high standards of performance per VHA policy. Maintain a safe environment for staff and patients conducive to maintaining patient satisfaction, staff morale and equal employment opportunity.
  • Promote teamwork, staff competency, efficient utilization of resources and communication within and outside the clinic.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Administrative working hours - Schedule can be discussed during interview and selection process.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board Certified/Eligibility in Internal Medicine or Family Practice, VA Experience and Supervisory experience, preferred for this position.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy Carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling (up to 4 hours); Pushing (up to 4 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 8 hours); Standing (up to 8 hours); Repeated bending (up to 2 hours); Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Mental and emotional stability.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
