Responsibilities

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for the quality and quantity of litigation of cases filed in the Homicide Section in the Superior Court Division.

Typical work assignments will include:
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of trial-related documents, e.g., discovery letters, exhibit lists, jury instructions, trial subpoenas, by applying a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.
  • Serves as contact person for assigned cases and provides information and assistance concerning status or relevant procedural issues. Exercises discretion and judgment in determining what information may be provided and to whom.
  • Prepares exhibits for trial which typically involves a wide range of visual materials including charts, diagrams, photographs and models.
  • Conducts interviews of law enforcement and potential witnesses to assist the AUSA in preparation for grand jury or trial; reviews, summarizes and outlines grand jury and/or trial testimony to assist the AUSA in preparation for grand jury or trial; researches, analyzes and summarizes relevant legal precedents for applicability to assigned cases; and prepares digest of points of law involved.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

To be qualified for the GS-09 level, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service; or a master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D.; or a combination of specialized experience and education.

Specialized Experience:
Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience is defined as applying principles, concepts and methods of legal research and analysis to perform assigned case development and documentation assignments; administering legal reference materials and performing legal research to compose legal documents and correspondence; verify citations and statutory references, search for, analyze for legal relevance, and summarize data, make conclusions, and recommend action; utilizing knowledge of the litigation process and activities to gather and analyze data to evaluate its usefulness in resolving legal issues; interpreting knowledge of the priorities, policies, procedures and goals of Attorneys sufficient to perform tasks including assembling information to be used for reports or responses to inquiries; communicating effectively and preparing legal briefs and summaries of analyses; composing legal correspondence and preparing materials; applying knowledge of applicable automation support hardware and software to automate various legal and office support functions and performing data retrieval.

Education:
A master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D.

Combining Education and Experience:
I have a combination of specialized experience and education which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above education requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. It is your responsibility to timely provide such evidence by submitting proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency with your application materials.
