The Emmes Company, LLC ("Emmes") is searching for a Senior Project Leader for our Vaccine & Infectious Disease Research Unit based out of our Rockville, Maryland, Frederick, Maryland or Tysons Corner, Virginia office. Emmes provides flexibility for the office location or work remote preference dependent upon position.

Primary Purpose

The Senior Project Leader successfully executes clinical research projects while maintaining a positive, effective, and responsive relationship with clients. As an expert in the clinical research field, the Senior Project Leader uses professional concepts in developing resolution to critical issues. Holding primary accountability for technical, scientific, fiscal and management oversight for one or more projects within the Vaccine and Infectious Disease (VID) research unit, the Senior Project Leader proactively communicates with internal and external stakeholders to provide timely resolution for strategic issues that impact upon project outcomes. As an experienced leader in the organization, this position partners routinely with the business development team to generate and grow new business.

The VID Therapeutic Research Unit supports infectious disease research across a wide range of disease areas, including: Malaria, Tuberculosis, Influenza, Ebola, MRSA, STI and Enteric pathogens, and emerging infectious diseases. VID supports Phase 1-4 clinical trials investigating vaccines and treatments for bacterial, viral, and parasitic agents, as well as epidemiological studies. Primary services include statistical design and analysis; bioinformatics support; implementation of Emmes' proprietary software for electronic data collection, data management, and electronic specimen tracking; preparation of study-related materials and web site development; generation of safety, regulatory, and final reports and manuscripts; clinical site training, assessment, and technical assistance; and study communication and collaboration.

Responsibilities
  • Works collaboratively to provide leadership across one or more projects and sets strategic direction in alignment with Clinical Project Management and/or Project Control Analyst support
  • Supervises, mentors, and supports less experienced Project Leaders and project staff to ensure they are properly trained for their current positions and have growth and development opportunities for the future; Conducts performance reviews
  • Proactively addresses client needs for ongoing and future studies; Represents the project or company at client meetings and scientific conferences
  • Utilizes broad understanding of therapeutic, clinical trial design, and/or process expertise to influence protocol design and study decisions taking into account client needs, budget considerations and the state of the field
  • Negotiates, obtains and oversees project contracts, scope of work, budgets, subcontracts, vendor agreements and resources to ensure delivery of high-quality contract deliverables
  • Identifies potential project risks and implements contingency plans, mitigates actual risk with team members and keeps client informed about risks and contingencies
  • Reviews and refines the project's organizational structure to ensure effectiveness and efficiency
  • Liaises with corporate service areas/verticals in securing staff resources
  • Participates in project review meetings with Therapeutic Research Unit (TRU) Directors and/or Therapeutic Research Unit (TRU) Oversight, and Commercial and Service Project Oversight, as applicable
  • Provides and monitors project performance metrics; Develops solutions for improvement of performance metrics as necessary
  • Participates in relevant corporate meetings and provides information learned to project team as applicable; Implements corporate initiatives within project
  • Works with the Chief Business Officer to serve as a subject matter expert and to discuss business opportunities with clients and study collaborators, as appropriate
  • Contributes to the development of operational strategy and budget for new business opportunities
  • Develops solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and innovation. Ensures solutions are consistent with corporate objectives; Acts as an advisor to subordinate(s) working to resolve problems
  • Communicates effectively and independently with internal and external staff
  • Serves as the point of contact for a client with no oversight; Oversees communication of subordinate(s) with clients
  • Leads proposal writing efforts and may represent the company in expanding business lines and offerings as the principal investigator on multiple contracts, task orders or grants

Experience
  • Doctorate degree in Medicine, Biostatistics or other relevant scientific field along with 8 years of working knowledge of the principles appropriate to the position including 5 or more years management experience in a research environment
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles of clinical research management
  • Leadership experience acquired through holding roles of increased accountability in addition to career progression
  • Track history of successfully competing for and acquiring new or continuing business within infectious diseases and/or related therapeutic areas
  • Subject matter expertise and specialization in vaccine and infectious disease knowledge
  • Exhibits collaboration skills by contributing to outstanding teamwork in the achievement of group and corporate goals
  • Takes Initiative and exhibits resourcefulness and action in making independent sound decisions
  • Demonstrated history of acting in a results-oriented manner, including performing beyond current job to meet critical deadlines and deliverables
  • History of providing service-oriented service to internal and external clients that goes beyond the expected
  • Demonstrated work history of responsibility including taking ownership of a situation and significantly improving processes and/or service levels
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to travel up to 10% to intercompany project offices and client sites
