External Relations Manager Job Summary:

Are you an experienced External Relations Manager with superior writing, communication, and organizational skills? Do you have a sharp eye for accuracy, syntax, grammar, and aesthetics? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you. A non-profit in Herndon, VA is looking for a full-time External Relations Manager to supervise their social media and public relations content. You will also support and help manage the delivery of external relations program elements related to the organization's corporate and affiliate partners. Finally, you will research, identify and manage program elements of new affiliate partner leads, events and opportunities to reach underserved customers.

External Relations Manager Responsibilities:
  • Supervise social media and public relations specialists.
  • Strategize new opportunities and angles to build awareness.
  • Proof content to ensure high quality content such as press releases.
  • Lead and execute project management on deliverables of current agreements with corporate sponsors and affiliate partners.
  • Research opportunities for targeting affiliate partners, especially in underserved markets.
  • Serve as the logistical contact with corporate and affiliate partners on execution and explore ways to optimize relationship for increased partnership opportunities.
  • Research speaking opportunities, panels and guest posting opportunities for company spokespersons.
  • Support the VP of External Relations with details in government relations requests.
  • Bring in new ideas on ways to expand the company's network and reach.
  • Lead and help write/edit key external projects such as the company's newsletter and the Annual Report.
  • Deliver regular reports of media reach and other related KPIs in external communications.
  • Assist with the compilation of monthly corporate and affiliate partner stats; help create sponsor reports.
  • Ensure that the organization's brand and identity is adhered to in all external relations communications.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for process improvement and reducing execution complexity.
  • QA own work to ensure flawless execution and delivery.

External Relations Manager Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public policy or related field of study preferred.
  • Experience working in non-profit preferred.
  • Experience managing, coaching and mentoring direct reports.
  • Superior copywriting and editing skills.
  • Good, creative intuition when it comes to messaging and designs that represent our brand and resonate with our audience.
  • MS Office proficiency (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel).
  • Self-starter with a drive to learn and the ability to work independently or collaboratively and under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and complete tasks on time with superior attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to coordinate many activities and manage strict deadlines.
  • Professional interpersonal skills with the ability to work with corporate and affiliate partners.
