Job Description:

Tutor will work with small groups of middle or high school students during the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) elective course live instruction under the supervision of the AVID teacher. Tutors must attend virtual training in order to utilize the AVID learning strategies while tutoring between 2-4 days per week, or approximately 7-15 hours per week, based on school schedule, site needs and tutor availability. Tutors may be asked to support tutorials for schoolwide programming beyond the AVID class. College students are highly encouraged to be a part of this program. Priority will be granted to those who can meet the hours necessary to support the elective class schedule.

Qualifications:
  • Attends or attended a post-secondary institution maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • Possesses a strong mathematics, science or English background, preferred but not required.
  • Possesses excellent communication, leadership and organizational skills.
  • Initiates action, is a self-starter, flexible and willing to grow personal technology skills and learn new routines; has general college entrance process knowledge.
  • Is available approximately 7-15 hours per week on a consistent basis from October-May.
  • Possesses reliable internet service and personal device (laptop, Chromebook, etc.; IPad and mobile phones are not ideal for this work) and willingness to learn Zoom platform for delivery of the tutorial expectations.
  • Commits to taking part in paid 6-hour blended learning training in early October.


Essential Functions:
  1. Assists students in their learning by facilitating inquiry-based content tutorial groups using a tutorial learning process and other AVID strategies through Zoom break-out rooms; AVID elective teachers will provide support to small group learning and tutors.
  2. Collaborates with middle school and/or high school faculty and other tutors to support and build the AVID program.
  3. Assists students in maintaining their AVID E-binders and Focused Notes (with calendar, assignment sheets, Tutorial Request Forms that support academic classes).
  4. Performs other duties as assigned by AVID elective teacher or site coordinator.

*Training on Zoom and the AVID Tutorial process will be included

Clearances:
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
