Summary

This position is in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Director, Planning and Project Management, Construction Division, Construction Branch. The selectee will be an Engineering Equipment Operator (Carpenter) performing driving and operating duties on a variety of heavy duty equipment and motor vehicles and performing carpentry duties. This temporary position requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Responsibilities

TOUR OF DUTY: DAY SHIFT (4:00 A.M. - 12:30 P.M.)

HOURS MAY CHANGE DUE TO OPERATIONAL NEEDS OF MANAGEMENT

This position is essential. Selectee will be required to report to work during emergencies and inclement weather situations.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Engineering Equipment and Vehicle Operation

• As an Engineering Equipment Operator uses various types of heavy equipment and vehicles, such as a backhoe, excavator, skid steer, a 10 wheel Kenworth Dump Truck (GVW 62,000 lbs.), in and around the Capitol Complex and many other heavy duty vehicles and equipment up to 62,000 lbs. GVW.
• Operates hydraulic dumping mechanisms to unload or spread materials. Hauls loads within and outside of the Capitol Complex including locations within D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
• As an essential employee, assists with snow removal and other emergencies.

Planning and Lay Out of Carpentry Work

• Plans, computes and lays out complex and exact projects with features such as arcs, tangents and circles for new construction and renovation projects. Interprets complex instructions, sketches, blueprints and building codes and uses advanced shop mathematics to calculate measurements and dimensions to produce finished products with precise fits and accurate dimensions. Determines the grade, size and type of lumber and materials required to complete carpentry projects to meet requirements and specifications. Determines the layout and work sequences required to complete carpentry jobs.
• Constructs, alters, installs, maintains and/or repairs items where accurate spacing, precise fit and structural soundness are essential, such as window frames, interior/exterior trim or staircases.

Carpentry Work

• Builds, installs, fixes and/or alters wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring work to close tolerances, fit, appearance and structural soundness, such as building frames, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, counter tops, bookcases, etc., for new construction and renovation projects. Builds and fixes a wide variety of structural items and items requiring limited decorative trim and molding. Installs or replaces interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings, counter tops and moldings. Builds and assembles items using a variety of joining techniques, such as mitered, rabbet, dado, biscuit, dowel and mortise and tenon joints.
• Fabricates and repairs historical ceilings, roofs, stairways, windows, architectural trim, studs, mud sills, steps and hand rails. Follows blueprints and drawings to assemble/re-manufacture parts and pieces of historic wood items or splice in new wood with old.
• Performs from complete designs and sketches to build concrete forms for foundations, columns, walls, beams, girders, catch basins, stairways, floor systems, slabs, waffle slab construction, one-way slabs, two-way joist construction, curtain walls and conductive flooring. Builds projects with steel, concrete, aluminum, acrylic, drywall, brass, glass, bronze, carpet, plastic, fiberglass, rubber, mirrors, stainless steel, steel wire and grating.
• Establishes and runs general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment, such as routers, band and scroll saws and drill presses. Operates and uses power and hand tools and woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, sanders, routers, power nailers, combustion-type saws, screw fasteners, drill presses and table saws. Establishes and adjusts stationary power equipment, such as radial arm saws.
• Does routine maintenance on equipment, including lubricating machines, changing and sharpening saw blades and adjusting drive belt tensions.
• Operates a wide variety of specialty carpentry machines and tools to accomplish specialized carpentry tasks such as cutting bevels, chamfers, dados, miter joints, laminating and the bending of wood.
• Builds, fixes, installs and supports items where accurate spacing, precise fit and structural soundness were essential, such as window frames, interior/exterior trim or staircases.

Administrative Matters

• Performs administrative duties related to vehicle usage, purchasing parts and equipment, inventory and storage of materials, supplies and equipment and record keeping for maintenance and D.C. inspections. Ensures that periodic maintenance is performed.
