The Research Lab Manager will oversee and coordinate activities of an academic science laboratory or core facility to assist faculty with management and administration of research and teaching programs. Will manage the day-to-day operations of a research laboratory or center. Responsible for operational success and assist to define strategy/direction in accordance with national standards and CNMC policies and procedures. Oversee the research operations of multiple research efforts under the direction of a Principal Investigator or Center Director. Design studies, collect and analyze data, and report results. Independently develop experimental methods and perform data analysis. Responsible to coordinate the analytical, administrative and supervisory functions necessary to manage research programs conducted by the department. Coordinate multiple research studies. Develop and implement standard policies and procedures. Integral to the management and operation of the lab. Oversee the management of lab-related materials, including monitoring cost effectiveness. Direct research technicians, assistants and medical students. Assist post-doctoral fellows with their research.

PhD or Master's Degree Bachelor's degree with > 5-7 years relevant experience. Major in basic science or related field. .

At least 4 - 8 years of related experience. At least 3-5 yearsof supervisory experience/management experience in related job function. .

Required Skills/Knowledge
Proficiency in the use of wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Proven ability to communicate effectively with a multi-disciplinary research team. Experienced in department budget and personnel communication. Consistently demonstrates adherence with the standards for the responsible conduct of research. Tests and procedures require the attainment of knowledge generally acquired from a master's degree program and additional experience and not from on the job training alone. Proficient in the use of administrative and clinical information resources and decision-support tools. Proficient in compiling and analyzing data to support upper management decision-making.

Functional Accountabilities

Conduct of Research
1. Plan, conduct, and manage research projects within the federal and institutional regulations and policies under the direction of the principal investigator.
2. Responsible for appropriate use of research funds and resources.
3. Comply with all annual job-related training and requirements.

Laboratory Activities
1. Perform and direct laboratory work.
2. Perform laboratory tests, which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods.
3. Plan projects.
4. Analyze results.
5. Modify methods and protocols, in conjunction with Principle Investigator.

Program Administration
1. Implement strategic plan through management of day-to-day operations of the research laboratory or center.
2. Troubleshoot operational issues and develop action plans to resolve.
3. Collaborate with upper management on significant operational issues/barriers.
4. Assist upper management in the development, implementation and evaluation of services, programs, policies and procedures, and performance standards to achieve departmental goals.
5. Responsible to administer programs and services within budgetary guidelines.
6. Collaborate with investigator to evaluate current as well as new program initiatives for effectiveness, feasibility and cost; assist investigator with preparation of grant applications and publications.

Human Resources Management
1. Hire, train, develop and direct assigned staff to meet research center operational objectives.
2. Assist faculty with all personnel functions including recruitment, performance evaluations and termination of staff.
3. Provide timely coaching and performance feedback.
4. Develop research staffing plan/schedule and deploy staff appropriately to optimize productivity and ensure quality services in support of research activities.

Budget and Financial Management
1. Facilitate the development and monitoring of individual laboratory budgets.
2. Assist Center Director to analyze performance reports for the center budget and evaluate budget variances.
3. Develop recommendations to facilitate Center meeting budget requirements.
4. Manage the development, evaluation and implementation of new ventures, services and partnerships within or outside CRI on behalf of the Center Director.
5. Develop business plans as needed.
