The Fairfax County Health Department is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' equitable access to health services and information.

Promotes and supports population health by providing leadership, management, and nursing expertise for emergency preparedness and response COVID-19 cases/outbreaks. Once the threat of the pandemic has resolved, supports assigned school health program sites in the areas of care coordination and health promotion. Leads and supervises a team of public health nurses, case investigators, and paraprofessional staff in providing epidemiological investigations of communicable disease cases in multiple high risk settings, and care coordination of students in school health services.

Responsibilities include professional development, emergency response operations, meetings, planning and training of health department and school staff. As a working supervisor, provides public health services including care coordination of students' health needs and health promotion activities. In collaboration with the Public Health Nurse (PHN) IV assigned to school health, ensures that school health program activities are implemented and evaluated. Participates in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring process of new public health staff for the school program and plans orientation to assimilate new staff into the program and culture of the health department. Participates in agency marketing and outreach activities to increase public health awareness in the community. Participates in programs to enhance community health services and education. Promotes individual and population health by assuring the quality and accessibility of health services, preventing the spread of disease, promoting and encouraging health behaviors, responding to disasters, bioterrorism, and assisting communities in recovery.

Note:
This position includes a signing bonus of $2,000 for new hires.

This position is temporarily responding to needs resulting from COVID-19.
This position is designated as essential and is part of the county's emergency response which operates seven days a week. Shift work may be required with hours during evenings and weekends during the emergency response. Based on emergency response deployment needs, this position will transition to a routine work schedule as determined by the emergency response service needs.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with a bachelor's degree in nursing; plus three years of post-licensure experience as a nurse in an equivalent health care setting whose focus was primarily prevention services and community education, including two years in a public health/community health setting; plus at least one year experience in a public health/community health specialty area or supervisory responsibilities.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Driver's License
AED-Required within 60 days
CPR -Required within 60 days

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three or more years of school health experience in a public health model providing health services to school aged children in ethnically diverse populations.
  • Experience coordinating, managing, and documenting communicable disease epidemiological investigations.
  • Must have a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with students, parents and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative connections with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to work independently, and on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and other software applications.
  • Experience working in health promotion, prevention, or education in the school setting.
  • Three years supervision of paraprofessional and/or professional staff.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a driving record check, a Child Protective Services Registry, and a sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employee is required to walk, stand, sit, bend, kneel, reach, climb stairs and carry equipment or young children up to 25 pounds in weight. Uses hands to grasp, handle or feel. Visual acuity required to read data on a computer monitor. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to drive a vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
